About
Breakwater Fish and Chips sits right in Port Macdonnell, South Australia, and has earned a solid reputation among locals and visitors alike. The menu covers the classics well, with flake, dim sims, seafood options, and steak burgers all on offer, and the signature serve of fish and chips with fresh salad keeps people coming back. Prices sit around the $11.50 mark, which makes it easy to eat well without spending much.
The chips are the real talking point here. Regulars describe them as crispy, generously salted with chicken salt, and well-portioned. The fish is noted for its succulent flesh and well-cooked batter, and the chip portions are notably large. The fisherman’s basket for two is a popular choice for groups, with many finding it more than enough. Gravy is available and served hot, and the steak burgers draw plenty of praise for both flavour and value.
Dine-in seating is available and looks out over the ocean, making it a worthwhile stop for tourists passing through the region. Takeaway is also on offer, and the service is consistently described as friendly and efficient. At least one visitor made the drive back to Port Macdonnell a second time just for the chips. The shop is family-friendly and suits groups of all sizes.

A really nice fish and chips shop, literally, our fish pieces were Devine (Blue Grenadine fish) we got chips and gravy, so much gravy and it was hot and yummy. The staff were happy and friendly, service was quick and efficient for a chip shop that was busy. Here on Christmas Eve looking for fish and chips today, a good call by the family. I almost forgot to take a picture of the food, so please forgive the half eaten fish and chips with gravy, they were hot, yummy and cooked perfectly Merry Christmas Breakwater fish and chips staff. Located straight across the road from the park and boat marina with plenty of space to sit and take in the views with yummy food.
A typical old-style fish and chip shop.
Food was well cooked, crispy batter and succulent fish. Chips were also delicious.
Chip serving size is very generous, the Fisherman’s basket for Two was more than enough for us.
$5 for minimum size chips enough for 2 people. Super fresh, crispy and lots of chicken salt. $8.50 bacon and egg burger was good too! There was no surcharge on eftpos and was quick service 🙂
Best steak burger ever! 🍔 😋 👌 😍 🙌 And extremely affordable around the $11.50 mark not overpriced like some places! Very filling! The chips 🍟 were perfect! Asked for extra chicken salt, otherwise can’t really taste salt, came out delicious! They also have a variety of meal packs that are very reasonably priced! Highly recommend!
I’m purely rating The Breakwater 5 star based on the food alone. The chips are to die for!! They are oily, crispy and have the best salt. I went back twice before leaving Port MacDonnell because I was obsessing over the chips. We also tried the Fried Mars Bars which were also surprisingly good!! The dippy dogs were spot on and so were the dim sims. Honestly, great take away!!

The fish pack with chips and salad is yummmmmm. Such a generous serve and always cooked perfectly. Good old fashioned fish and chip shop. Hopefully when it sells, it stays the same and Aussies buy it 😉
Probaly the worst fish and chips i have had in 40 years.
The flake was so hard i nearly couldn’t tear it let alone eat it, too much salt, and chips smelt of stale oil. staff very average.
