About
Golden Rooster is a well-established fish and chip shop in Salisbury, South Australia, with a loyal following that stretches back decades. The shop serves lunch and dinner seven days a week, with dine-in, takeaway, and delivery all available, making it a flexible option for families and regulars alike.
The menu leans heavily into crowd-pleasing comfort food. Chicken packs, BBQ chicken, and chicken schnitzel are popular choices, and the fillet cold and hot packs give seafood fans plenty to work with. The Seafood Pack and Burger With the Lot round out a menu that covers more ground than a typical fish and chip shop. The chips and gravy is the signature dish, and long-term regulars rate the gravy as among the best in Adelaide. Hot chips cooked well and seasoned properly keep people coming back, visit after visit.
Golden Rooster is halal-certified and offers vegetarian options alongside a salad bar, so there’s something for most dietary preferences. The venue is family-friendly, wheelchair-accessible, and has free on-site parking, which makes the trip easy for most people. Card and mobile payments are accepted.
Opinions on consistency do vary, so ordering with a specific preference, such as asking for fish to be well cooked, can help. That said, plenty of Salisbury locals have been eating here for thirty-plus years and keep returning for a reason. Phone ahead for larger orders during the dinner service.

A old style place and few lots of regular customers. It was my first time and I really enjoyed the food. The reviews are mixed, but I really had a positive experience. The fish was fresh and well cooked (I asked for it to be well cooked). The salads were perfect combination for the fish. The chips are remarkable. The guy was friendly and did suggest the seafood salad which lived up to the expectation. Well it was a large meal for that price.
Just bought lunch for myself. Chicken was uncooked and totally raw in the middle. The greek salad was off. The olives were decaying and smelled like compost. Whats happened to this place. Used to be the best place around. Disgusting.
I’ve been coming here since the early 1980s and never had a problem. Fantastic service and amazing food. The unique gravy is the best in Adelaide!
Don’t eat very often these days, but as has been for the last 30+ years very solid feed every time I come. Well cooked hot chips and perfect amount of salt on top
Ordered chiko roll and they gave me a corn jack, got home open my chicken burger for it to look like you just dump everything on.
The food was over cooked, to the point where the fish was falling apart and the meat in the steak sandwich was hard and rubbery, they started cooking the fish before the steak sandwich and when the fish and chips were cooked, they sat in the frying basket above the oil while they then cooked the steak sandwich which took around 20 minutes
the two males in the shop obviously had no idea what they were doing. One of them couldn’t even put a food container in a bag and needed the other person to assist him.
It was so painful to watch.
Don’t think we’ll be going back
The service we got today was absolutely amazing
Food was even better definitely would recommend again
Thank you to the kindness of the person working behind the counter 🙏
The very handsome Pakistani man with curly hair handled my food with care and made sure it was very tasty, would love to see him working more often
