About
Fishy Business is a well-known fish and chip shop in Hobart’s CBD, drawing a steady crowd of locals and visitors alike. The menu leans heavily into fresh seafood, with blue grenadier, scallops, prawns, and Bruny Island oysters among the highlights. Grilled and crumbed fish options both feature regularly, and the crumbed fish in particular is noted for its crispy finish. The chowder has its fans too, described as rich and flavoursome by those who’ve tried it.
Portion sizes are generous, and the seafood is regarded as good value for a central Hobart location. The Bruny Island oysters are a genuine drawcard, bringing a freshness that makes them a standout order for anyone who appreciates quality shellfish. Chips receive a more mixed response, though the overall meal experience keeps people coming back. Ice cream is also available for those wanting to finish on a sweet note.
Dine-in seating is available at the back of the premises, making it a comfortable option for families or those wanting to sit down after a wander through the city. Takeaway is available as well. Service is generally described as attentive and friendly, and the shop is popular for both lunch and dinner.
Worth a visit for anyone after fresh seafood in Hobart’s CBD. Phone ahead during busy dinner periods to avoid a wait.

Delicious crispy crumbed fish and the tacos were superb too. My husband had the chowder and did not regret it one bit. It was very flavoursome. We have eaten here before and just love the location and the spot to sit out back looking at the water. The girl who served us was very friendly. Delicious meal had by the 3 of us tonight and generous portion sizes.
Good little spot here, most of the food was tasty and especially the oysters from bruny island(amazing) they are also very reasonable. The fish and chips were very good, the only downfall was the extra bits like scallops and calamari just feels pre bought and average
I was looking for fish and chips for dinner in Hobart CBD. Someone recommended Mako Seafood, but there was no wait at Fishy Business so I gave them a go. Ordered a meal deal including 3 pieces of fish, small chips and a salad. There were sauces and salt on the counter to add yourself. Fishy Business has collected a few negative reviews, but my meal was fine. Big portions, cooked well, all tasted good. I was hungry and this meal really hit the spot. No dine in here, purely takeaway which suited.
Had the prawns wit some chips. The Food was good. It would have been perfect if there was some mayo to add but they had some other condiments you could add. They have some seating options at the back of the boat. They also sell some IceCream, the saltedcaramel was amazing. It was a bit of a wait but both things had generous portion sizes
The best spot to eat the freshest seafood. We had the grilled fish and chips and Bruny island oysters. Such good value. The oysters were soo fresh and tasted like the ones we had at Bruny island. One of our best meals of our trip.
Our flathead and Chips were delicious, and yes, the fish chowder thick but I thought it was good. I like dill.
Staff was nice imho, and the seating in back was great! I dunno why the poor reviews. Nice unique place to grab a quick snack or meal.
Being from NZ we love our fish and chips and we get grumping paying a lot for fish and chips that don’t meet our high standards. I got the blue grenadier, scollops, prawns all crumbed and a potato cake. As a fish and chip snob they were a 10/10. We have been in Hobart 5 days and have gone back 4 times.
Purchased blue eye and calamari. Fish was “hard” and dry, calamari tasteless and chips were a terrible yellow, tasting ordinary (which is a favourable description). We ate very little of it, having to put it in bin. Cannot recommend this establishment.
