About
Salt Water Fish & Chips is a casual fish and chip shop in Bentleigh East, serving the local community for lunch and dinner. With seating for around 20 people indoors, plus takeaway and delivery options, it suits a range of occasions from a quick solo bite to a family meal. Convenient parking nearby and accessible facilities make it an easy stop.
The menu covers familiar favourites: battered fish, chips, potato cakes, dim sims, and hamburgers. The signature Hamburger with the Lot has drawn repeat visitors, and steamed dim sims are a popular addition to any order. For those with coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance, Salt Water uses a separate fryer for gluten-free items and stamps orders to confirm the right food reaches the right customer. The shop has earned a solid reputation among the gluten-free community in Bentleigh East, with the batter described as notably crispy and the potato cakes a decent size.
The shop is clean and the fit-out is straightforward and unfussy. Regulars appreciate the friendly, welcoming service on most visits, though experiences can vary depending on how busy the kitchen is. It is worth noting that gluten-free orders may not be available during peak periods, which is actually reassuring for those who need strict separation.
The overall rating sits just above four stars across a solid volume of reviews, reflecting a broadly positive but occasionally inconsistent track record. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to check availability and wait times.

I have never had worse fish and chips sorry guys! The customer service was fast and fantastic but the food just ruined it completely. I ordered calamari flake and a potato cake all gluten free. The calamari batter was so thick you couldn’t taste the calamari and it tasted sweet the flake was overcooked and very dry and the potato cake just tasted like a don’t. Nothing was seasoned and I would never order here due to the completely inedible food. I threw mine in the bin after one bite of each!
Ordered a plain burger and battered burger. Both beef patties were raw. Pathetic. Rung to complain, offered no apology or refund. Definitely won’t be back. Incompetent at cooking food and customer service. I definitely won’t be back. Disappointing on all levels
The one star is for providing gluten free options.
I visited this establishment last week for some time ago perhaps new owners?
The order consisted of grilled flake, battered flake and potato cakes.
When I went to pick up my order, the staff were yelling out the back. I waited on the street and still could hear. The son? was fishing for a can out a rubbish bin.
The food was so oily that it made such a good hand moisturiser and not so good for acid reflux.
Plus overcooked.
Learn how to cook fish and chips
Our local fish and chips. Standard fare and used to be quite good but has gone downhill in recent months. Last night ordered flake and got what was pretty much 2 fish bites. Very oily. One potato cake was hard and crispy the other mushy. Will find a new place.
Great gluten free fish and chips, separate fryer and stamp on top to confirm the right order. They won’t do gf if very busy, which if coeliac is comforting. Most crunchy gf batter I have had and good size potato cakes & dim sim.
Really nice food.
Was wondering why the Asian woman was watching the young man like a hawk.
I own a business and that would set any staff member on edge
😜It’s my second time to come here!!!
I will rate food 💯. Exterior is crisp. Interior is soft~~~ I love~~~~
Also, good customer service!!!
Been to Saltwater Fish and Chips a few times.
What I ordered are
Steamed Dim Sims Potato Cakes Hamburger with The Lot
The shop is always very clean.
The staff are friendly, polite and welcoming.
It is located near Ritchies IGA where there is a large car park.
There is a toilet block with an Accessible Bathroom in the car park.
Probably seats about 20 people on the tables inside where people can enjoy their meal.
I enjoyed my Hamburger with The Lot. I needed both hands to pick it up to start munching. It was filling, lots of toppings and reminded me of the Old fashioned Hamburgers I had growing in the 1970’s. Yummy.
The potato cakes were nice – I think there were on the smallish side . Crunchy with Soft Insides- the way I like them.
Steamed Dim Sims – to me a steamed Dim Sim is a steamed Dim Sim. Something to nibble on as an entree while waiting for the Main Order. I never ever have Soy Sauce on Dim Sims.
I would take ‘Wifey’ to Saltwater Fish and Chips if we wanted to sit down and eat there. I feel comfortable and relaxed sitting down there. It is walking distance. Think she would enjoy it.
Personally, I would like to listen to some background music while eating there.
Enjoy.
