About
Ocean Fresh on Eley is a well-regarded fish and chip shop serving Blackburn South and the surrounding suburbs of Melbourne’s east. The menu covers the classics done well, with grilled flake, calamari rings, salmon, dim sims, and potato cakes all on the list. Regulars favour the chips in particular, consistently described as crispy and hot rather than the limp, soggy variety found elsewhere.
Generous serving sizes are a recurring theme, with most visitors leaving more than satisfied. The souvlakis earn their own following, noted for being packed with meat and full of flavour. Value for money is another drawcard, with cheap deals that make the shop a reliable option for a family dinner without blowing the budget. Service is quick and the staff are friendly, which keeps the regulars coming back.
The shop operates for both lunch and dinner, with takeaway and delivery available. Free parking and a wheelchair-accessible car park make it easy to visit. Some recent feedback does flag occasional inconsistency in food quality and pricing, so it pays to check current specials before ordering.
For a solid fish and chips meal in Blackburn South, Ocean Fresh on Eley is worth adding to the shortlist. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to keep wait times short.

This place is honestly the best fish and chip shop I have tried around this area, although they aren’t competing against tough competition. They have nice cheap deals and the serving sizes are more than you need, so always left feeling over-satisfied. Their chips have nice crunchy pieces you scrounge around for, the flake batter is nice and crunchy, and the calamari rings are beautifully cooked (no stringy bit and battered).
Just found this little gem near my place, but never tried until tonight. Very fresh and clean fish and chips, as is the shop. Probably the cleanest and freshest looking, feeling and smelling fish/chippery I’ve come across in a long time. Friendly folks, great value, quality food. So happy we found it and it’s near our place too. (p.s. Can’t give a 5 star unless and until I’ve tried everything…otherwise, it’s all thumbs up so far.)
Great service with friendly staff. The chips are always crispy and hot. Souvlakis are generous in their serving of meat and taste great. Dim sims, potato cakes are generally on par too. Fish is always consistent- not the freshest in taste. But what do you expect today and in the suburbs too? Price is standard for fish and chips. By far the best fish and chip shop in this local area.
When did 1 piece of fish and a small serve of chips hit $16!!! Fish is always overbattered and over cooked, even if you ask . The last time I was here the dim sims, which used to be the typical kind – tasty , a bit of minced meat and cabbage etc- changed to one’s that the mince was similar in texture to cat food. So between the $16 overcooked/overbattered fish & chips and the horrid cheap dim sims, I would say I will no longer be coming here for fish & chips.
SInce I have been coming to this lovely shop – I’m impressed and so is everyone who has had the pleasure of trying this fish N chips – freshness guaranteed and nice fresh crisp chips not soggy at all just the way Fish and chips should always taste
The food was very average. Calamari rings had far too much batter and were rubbery. The salmon was okay. I would not order here again
Lost customer – not returning.
$9.50 for a piece of dry/overcooked grilled flake, which was 22 cm long and 3.5 wide at one end, then narrowed down to 2.5 at the other was a rip off. And then they had the temerity to tell me that they don’t do a fish and chips pack without dimsims and potato cakes, and I would have to pay $6.50 for a small chips.
Best fish and chips I’ve had for a very long time. Really great value for $ too.
