About
Hampton Road Fish & Chips is a casual fish and chip shop in Essendon West, open for lunch and dinner with dine-in, takeaway, and delivery all available. Free street parking and a nearby car park make it an easy stop, and the shop is welcoming to families as well as solo diners.
The menu goes beyond the standard feed. Fish souvlaki and chicken schnitzel burgers get regular mentions alongside the classic fish and chips, and the shop is known for offering well-priced portion options that suit different appetites. Regulars in the Niddrie and Essendon area point to consistently fresh, crispy chips and quality seafood as reasons they keep coming back, with some travelling a fair distance for the food. Service is frequently highlighted as warm and friendly, and wait times tend to be shorter than at comparable shops in the area.
It is worth noting that some recent feedback raises concerns around portion accuracy and occasional inconsistencies with battered items and oil quality, so experiences can vary. The shop carries decent reviews overall from a solid base of diners, and for many in the western suburbs it fills the gap nicely when other options aren’t available.
Reservations are accepted, which can be handy during busier periods. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to confirm your order.

Great fish-N-chips shop, the fish souvlaki and chicken schnitzel burger are well made and fresh. This store is an excellent alternative when your favourite store is closed. Hidden in the side streets of West Essendon you’ll find this store just a block away from all three Roads … Rosehill, Hoffmans and Buckley.
Hampton Road Fish & Chips is my go to Fish and Chip shop, the prices are great, better than any other fish and chip shop in my area, they have a perfect sized “pack” that suits me and is extremely well priced for what you get, my order is cooked to perfection and is delivered to me well packaged and hot.
If you haven’t tried them because of the few negative reviews you’re doing yourself a disservice. The honest negative reviews are no doubt because people prefer a different style of preparation, fair enough, not all Fish and Chip shops are created equal, some cook their fish and chips more oily and some are more dry, I won’t preempt what you think these are, but try them for yourself. To me they are crispy and cooked just right.
As another reviewer said the flake is always large and crispy as are the potato cakes and chips, the fried dim sims are cooked to perfection 😉
The best fish and chip shop in the Niddrie/Essendon area. The chips are always well cooked, fresh and crispy and the fish and seafood is always fresh and delicious. Wait time is much shorter than other shops in the area too. Very friendly family that run it.
the food here is amazing, i don’t usually eat fish and chips but this store changed my mind. i drive 1 hour just to eat here. the service is amazing they always serve me with the biggest smile and is so nice when creating convos, creating a good atmosphere to be around, genuinely the best!!!!!!!!
these comments are wrong!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing fish and chips. They must change the oil here often because it always tastes great!!
Guys it may be a good idea to check the quality of the food before wrapping it up! Not a good experience I’m sorry to say. Grilled flake had no taste with poor batter used. Dim sims and corn jacks were all burnt. I don’t think oil is changed regularly too? I’m sorry as I don’t like to give negative feedback but I’m hoping you’ll use this as constructive criticism to improve your product offering!
A slice of the 1980s with aged service to match. Paid for three potato cakes, bro gave us 2.5 potato cakes. Paid for flake, bro gave us whiting.
Friendly owner – Delicious fish and chips. I recommend it.
