About
King George’s Seafood & Oysters is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in Fairfield, Victoria, drawing regulars and newcomers alike for lunch and dinner. The shop carries a strong reputation built on consistently fresh, properly cooked seafood and friendly, efficient service that holds up even during the busy dinner rush.
The battered flake is the standout here. The batter is light, crispy, and not too thick, and the fish itself is fresh rather than frozen-through, which makes a real difference to the final result. Potato cakes are another highlight, and the chips are generous by reputation, with regulars noting that extra chips tend to find their way into the bag regardless of the order. Portions are solid across the board, and the food is not oily, which is a mark of good frying technique. Families are well catered for, with kids meal packs available.
King George’s operates as a casual, counter-service venue with dine-in and takeaway options. There are no reservations and no table service, so the experience is relaxed and straightforward. Free street parking makes it easy to stop in, and the staff are consistently described as friendly and quick. For anyone searching for fish and chips in Melbourne’s inner north, Fairfield is well worth the detour.

Been here a few times on my way past and it’s always a great experience. Staff are friendly and service is quick even in busy times. It’s really good value food as well – the seafood is fresh and not oily at all. Chips and other food is also always very delicious and not greasy or oily. Servings are very generous – highly recommended!
Really good fish & chips shop.
Fish was fresh, juicy and flavourful.
Potatoe cakes & chips were well cooked.
Service was great with friendly greeting & table service.
Prices are normal, $32 for 2 flake or gren, 2 potato cakes & dimmies, and a good helping of chips.
Highly recommend if your in the area.
Finally!🐟 🍟 Decent fish and chips is rare these days 🤩 Support this business! Fish was a good size and tasty, not dry or waterlogged from still being frozen when fried. Batter was cooked properly, crispy and not too thick. Chips and potato cake were nicely cooked, not too thick or thin, and not too greasy from overloading the fryer and making the oil temp drop. No gimmicks, no silly spices on the fish to disguise the poor quality, no fillets being cut in half to make two. Just honest fish and chips cooked properly – $20 for fried flake, sml chips, potato cake, dimsim. Thank you! 🙏 I’ll keep coming
Really good portions and everything was cooked fresh. Definitely recommend and will be coming back here!
The battered fish was perfectly light and crispy – I think the best quality I’ve had in Melbourne and glad it came from a locally owned business 🙂 thankyou!
I took the grandkids here for fish and chips. The kids meal pack was very generous with two large fish bites, two chicken nuggets and minimum size chips. More than enough for two young children. The service was friendly and the atmosphere fairly quiet for Saturday lunch time.
Whenever I’m in Fairfield, I make sure visit King George – consistently the best fish and chips in Melbourne, light and easy batter and no matter what they throw a handful of chips in the bag (even if you didn’t order them).
Best in Melbourne.
Really lovely and friendly staff, fast and tasty food. Potato cakes were top-notch and flake was delicate. Will definitely be coming back!
Hands down the best fish and chip shop in the inner north east. I travel from Kew to Fairfield to go here. George is also great for a chat and the rest of the staff are lovely.
