About
Showgrounds Fish & Chip Shop sits in Flemington, a short distance from the famous showgrounds precinct, and draws a steady crowd for its straightforward menu of fish and chips, burgers, and steak sandwiches. The potato cakes are the shop’s signature item and attract repeat visitors on their own. Dine-in and takeaway are both available, and the shop is family friendly, wheelchair accessible, and has free on-site parking.
The menu covers the classics, and a portion of regulars describe the batter as crispy and the pricing as reasonable for the area. That said, the experience is not entirely consistent. Some visits produce well-cooked, tasty food; others have drawn criticism for greasy chips, bland calamari, or portions that disappointed on value. The steak sandwich and fish have each attracted strong negative feedback on occasion, so results can vary depending on the day and the order.
For anyone looking for a local fish and chip shop near Flemington for a casual lunch or dinner with the family, this spot ticks a number of practical boxes. Card and mobile payments are accepted, and parking is free. Phone ahead if ordering something specific to confirm it’s on that day’s menu.

Got fish pack. Fish was half raw. Called to complain and they said it’s just juicy. NO IT WAS RAW!!!!! IM LOOKING AT UNCOOKED FISH, I told them. As you can see from photo’s, parts are RAW!!!
Unfortunately pretty appalling.
10 dollar fish and chips pack is just that. Cheap. The fish was bland, flavourless and undercooked. Chips were unsalted, soggy and plain, very plain. Such a shame
Very well priced, on the cheaper side. Got the calamari snack pack, great amount of food however had absolutely zero flavour, even the calamari was extremely bland. Chips were all the small end cuts which is annoying because they’re crunchy but have no mash to it. Overall ok but for a couple dollars more there better in the area.
Ordered min chips, they fit in one of those small brown paper bags that you’d get 2 dim sims in, then they charged extra for chicken salt! Surely if you’re running a chip shop you absorb the price of salt as a cost of doing business. I was absolutely flabbergasted and won’t be returning.
Wanted to buy grilled flake and chips, and a fish burger. However, their menu states that they use BASA for the fish burger andI prefer flake so I asked how much extra to upgrade the fish to flake. I was told they don’t change the fish fir the burger and that they dont do grilled flake, even though their menu shows grilled flake is an option for an additional fee! The woman was rude and made me wait about 6 mins befire asking me what I wanted. I ended up leaving without ordering and going to Seafood Basket in Keilor East who were lovely. Do yourselves a favour and shop elsewhere l!
A steak sandwich so bad I’m actually shocked enough to write a review. Overcooked, dry, tasteless rubber. Dry bread, very little sauce. Avoid.
I’ve been coming here for years and it is without doubt the best fish and chip shop around Flemington, nice crispy batter and reasonably priced too.
Food was nice. 😊 Only $10.50 for Burger with the lot!
