About
Ocean Star Fish & Chips is a well-regarded fish and chip shop serving Forest Hill and the surrounding suburbs of Melbourne’s east. The menu centres on generous, satisfying portions, and the seafood pack is the clear crowd favourite, combining flake, chips, scallops, prawns, crab stick, and the shop’s home-made potato cakes. That $8.50 combination deal offers solid value for the area.
Those potato cakes deserve a mention of their own. Regulars consistently rate them among the best they have tried, made in-house rather than bought in pre-made, and fried to a crisp finish. The chips arrive well-seasoned, and the batter on the fish is praised for being light and properly cooked. Friendly, approachable staff add to the experience.
Ocean Star carries a well-rated reputation across more than 140 reviews, and the shop itself is noted for being sparkling clean and casual in feel. It suits families well, with wheelchair-accessible entry, an accessible car park, and free parking on site. Both takeaway and delivery are available, so it works for a quick pickup or a meal at home.
For anyone looking for fish and chips in Forest Hill, this is a shop that takes the classics seriously. Phone ahead for delivery orders during the dinner rush.

8 Reviews on “Ocean Star Fish & Chips”
Driving around doing maintenance jobs worked us up quite an appetite. It became apparent that we were in need of some tato cakes and chippies to vitalise our bodies. After much googling we struggled to find the right fit to curb our hunger. However, the stars aligned and it turned out Ocean Star was actually located opposite our last job of the day. Wouldn’t read about it. So we figured we best take her for a spin. Many good signs on arrival, a clean work space and friendly greeting. It was apparent that the chef took his craft seriously and knew how to execute. “6 tato cakes and a large chips with extra salt thanks”. After the 10 mins had ticked by we were blessed with a paper bag from heaven. Perfectly crispy chips with a spot on amount of chicken salt. Our eyes lit up as we gazed upon those little peculiar cakes of happiness. Their shiny, crisp edges and perfectly imperfect shape put a smile on our faces. And don’t get me started on when we realised they had given us a 7th at no extra cost. Do yourself a favour
Delicious chips with a generous amount of chicken salt!
Super friendly staff as well😊
Potato cakes are also delicious!!
Def recommend if you love your food extra fried and crispy!!
Always great friendly service.
Great Fish & Chips and definitely the best homemade potato cakes I’ve ever had.
I ordered via Uber eats. The order took almost 1 hour and 15 minutes. The dim sims appeared that they were sitting in a bay marie for some time. Hamburger bun was burnt and hamburger just slapped together. Flake didn’t appear to be fresh. Did not eat hamburger or dim sims. Paid $64 for 2 flakes, chips, cheeseburger, and a few potato cakes. I understand the cost included Uber fees. In the end we only ate the chips. Will not get my money again. When I rang to enquire as to the delay with the delivery all they could say we are busy you will have to wait. Waste of money. There are a number of good fish shops nearby. The good fish shops were closed on Monday.
We waited almost 1.5 hours for a burger pack and a fish pack after ordering online via the business’s website. Unbelievable. I tried calling to order first but nobody picked up. The beef burger pattie was way too salty with an excessive amount of tomato sauce. The bread roll was so soggy that I had to use cutlery to eat it. I ended up throwing half the burger in the bin. The chips were passable. The best thing was the cold can of drink which even they couldn’t stuff up. Never again. Avoid this place. There is no excuse for that kind of service. We only tried here because our regular place was closed. Well we’ll never be back.
Easily the best fish and chips in the area – second place isn’t even close. It’s like walking back in time to when people used to do it properly; I’m talking home-made potato cakes, perfect batter, and generous portions. Prices are also amazing – $2.20 for a can of coke or $1 for a bottle of water. $8.50 and you can get chips, potato cake, dim sim and 2 fish bites – in 2025 that’s just unheard of.
If I could give more than 5 stars I would – they’re exceptional every single time!!
I ordered the seafood pack with potato cakes — everything was fresh, crispy, and absolutely delicious. The flake was golden, crispy, and tender, and the chips were crunchy and fluffy. The scallops, prawns, and crab stick were delish. The man serving was friendly with a warm smile . One of the best fish and chips spots in the area — definitely worth trying if you’re in Forest Hill! 🐟🍟
Possibly the most useless fish and chip shop in the world. 21st century decline is literally evident at this business. After years of custom it was ended in a moment. Sell the business, let us all hope for the best.
