About
The Fish Bite Sydenham has built a solid reputation as one of Hillside’s favourite fish and chip shops, drawing regulars who appreciate an old-school approach to a classic Australian staple. The chips are praised for being genuinely crunchy and well-salted, the fish is fresh, and the potato cakes are handmade rather than sourced from a freezer bag. That kind of attention to the basics is increasingly rare, and the locals have noticed.
The menu covers the classics well. Flake and barramundi both feature, along with potato cakes, steamed dim sims, and South Melbourne market dim sims for those who know the difference. The lot burger also gets a mention as a solid, satisfying option. Portions are considered generous without the price hike that has crept into many similar shops around the area.
Dine-in, takeaway, and delivery are all available, and orders placed through delivery services have arrived hot and quickly. The shop is family-friendly with wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance, and seating, making it a practical choice for a wide range of visitors. Card and mobile payments are accepted, and no reservation is needed.
For anyone after honest fish and chips in Hillside without paying over the odds, The Fish Bite Sydenham is well worth adding to the regular rotation. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to keep wait times short.

One of the better old school fish and chip spot I’ve tried this side of town that are not overpriced like the others.
Chips were very crunchy and nicely salted. The lot burger nicely done and tasty.
We will only be coming back here for fish and chips now
Old-school fish and chips, rare to find a place like this these days. High quality, fresh fish, and the potato cakes are all handmade (none of that frozen stuff). We keep going back consistently because it never leaves my family with an oily aftertaste.
1. Food pretty good.
Lovely barramundi
Real potatoe cakes.
Nice juicy scallops…
Batter good..
Flake very good size..
Hot dogs in batter could’ve been the fatter ones instead if the skiny ones..
Crab stick good..
2. Cleanliness
think 🤔 it could be better.
Bit of a clean wouldn’t go astray…
Oil might need a change
Or
Drain the food a little bit longer…
But still very nice…
3. Price
Very good.
Definitely worth going back…
4. Staff.
Very helpful & polite.
Man behind the counter very curtious & well organised…
Definitely have a try
Don’t think 🤔 food wise you’d be disappointed…

Best fish and chips by far.Old school.
Always spot on every time, never disappoints!
Best chips but fish is not great.
Shop needs a major renovation.
Nothing special here. The food was average and the fish was way too greasy for my liking. The chips were good, though.
We ordered via Uber Eats and got our delivery relatively quickly. Food was still very hot when received. We got a half flake, barramundi, potato cakes, steamed dim sims and South Melbourne market dim sim. Everything was delicious. Couldn’t fault it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Absolutely top-tier fish and chips. The fish is always perfectly cooked — light, crispy batter on the outside and beautifully flaky on the inside, not greasy at all. Chips were golden, fresh, and properly crunchy, not the soggy kind you get from other places.
Portion sizes were generous, prices were fair, and everything tasted fresh. You can tell they actually care about quality here. Service was friendly and fast, even during busy periods, which is always a bonus.
Easily one of the best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. If you’re in the area and craving proper, old-school fish and chips done right, this place is a must visit. Will definitely be back!
