About
Banksia Fish Shop is a family-run fish and chip shop in Ivanhoe, Victoria, with a loyal following built on fresh seafood, solid value, and owners who genuinely care about getting orders right. The shop holds a well-rated reputation among locals, and it’s easy to see why regulars keep coming back.
The menu covers the classics done properly. Flake, barramundi, King George whiting, prawns, calamari rings, and salt and pepper squid all feature, with fish and chips the clear crowd favourite. The batter is consistently described as light, not oily, and the fish cooked through without being overdone. Chip serves are generous at a time when plenty of shops have quietly been cutting portions or lifting prices, so the value here is a genuine point of difference. Burgers also get a strong mention, with the meat cooked properly and the whole package well put together.
Beyond the seafood, Banksia Fish Shop runs a pizza side of the menu that draws its own regulars. The owners are known for accommodating custom topping requests, which suits families with fussy eaters. A kids’ menu is available, making this a practical choice for a family dinner. Vegetarian options are on offer as well.
Takeaway and delivery are both available, and free street parking makes a pickup run easy. The shop is open for lunch and dinner. Phone ahead during the dinner rush if you have a specific order in mind.

Great Fish and chips, when every other shop is either reducing serving sizes or upping prices this place is maintain great value. Last night’s order came with a gigantic piece of battered fish that was cooked perfectly and more chips them we could eat. Highly recommended for anyone in the area
Traditional style fish and chips cooked well, not oily and very tasty!
The burgers are very good also, meat cooked as burgers should be…..not raw like some shops?? A big no-no!
Staff are polite, don’t expect a chat, but like reviewers have pointed out, slow. Recommend phone order as wait time is sometimes long. But well worth the patience and wait.
Gus truely recommends this place🍔🍔👍
The best fish and chips I’ve had in Australia! Not oily and perfectly cooked batter!! The burger lot is awesome too. Will definitely be ordering that one again, craving it again already.
The owners are so lovely too.
Also recently voted no.2 in Melbourne for the annual fish and chip awards ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Very solid fish and chip shop. Everything is well done and things are very reasonably priced as well. Service is lovely too. It’s a very well regarded F&C ship in the area. No wonder it does so well.
Sorry but this is disappointing. You could of just redone the one potato cake but ok?? Also the steak sandwich was foul, dry meat and unappealing as soon as I saw it. Do not recommend this place.
Food is appalling, hamburger had 2 hairs in it, chips, fish and potato cakes were soggy. When we called to give them feedback they had nothing to say except excuses, no apology, no rush to rectify, kept calling my wife “darling…”. Condescending & disgraceful service, food, atmosphere, and attitude. Never ever ever again will I shop there… Such a shame the old owners are gone.
Great local family run Pizza place. Always accomadating of topping changes and the best connection with the owners.
Small shop and the new owners are very nice. Food is good quality and the packs are very good value. Mostly only sell coca cola so probably need more variety in drinks
