About
Blue Sea is a well-regarded fish and chip shop serving the Murrumbeena community across lunch and dinner, operating as a takeaway and delivery service. With a solid four-plus star reputation built across a strong volume of reviews, it has earned a loyal following in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs.
The menu leans into the classics done well. Potato cakes are a clear favourite among regulars, praised for their consistently crispy finish, and the calamari rings draw repeat visits from families who come back specifically for them. Crumbed fish is another highlight, with generous portion sizes that often surprise first-timers. Chips are served in hearty quantities, and it is not uncommon for the kitchen to toss in an extra piece or two. The shop also offers quick bites and coffee alongside the core seafood range.
What keeps people coming back is the combination of value and friendliness. Portions are large enough that many regulars share a single serve between two people. The owners and staff are noted for their warm approach, and the shop itself is kept in excellent condition. Families are well catered for, and the venue accepts card and mobile payments for convenience. Free street parking is available nearby.
Blue Sea is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so it is worth planning around that. Phone ahead during the dinner rush, as a wait is common during peak periods.

Ordered a single pack over the Easter break and was pleasantly surprised at how big the portions were and it was delicious. Such a friendly welcoming place. I will definitely order again. Great service and very tasty food.
Value-for-money seafood with friendly owners. Tasted good and the portions were huge, enough for two to share. They give a lot of chips/fries!
The family always comes back here for the potato cakes and calamari rings, one of the cleanest and neatest shops you’ll find (well maintained and organized).
The potato cakes are consistently some of the best we’ve ever had, nice crispy batter (not too thick or chewy) with a super large slice of fluffy potato. I asked the owner where he gets them, and he mentioned he makes each one himself hence the batter is consistently thin and crunchy. Definitely a winner and you can see the owners take pride in their fare.
Kept their prices & quality consistent even when there was a bit of a chip/potato shortage and energy and oil costs were going through the roof the past few years. Happy to support this quality and fair business, with generous portions.
A little bit of a history lesson for those interested. Blue Sea Fish & Chips in Murrumbeena has had three different owners over the past 15 years, and the experience has been different each time.
Fifteen years ago, it was a good-quality, humble fish and chip shop. From memory, the inside was white and grey, and it was the type of place you’d visit at least twice a week. The prices were reasonable, the staff were friendly, and the food was good.
Then, around 8 or 9 years ago, management changed—and so did the décor. It became blue inside, fitting the name. But the quality dropped so hard that my family and I stopped going, even though we lived less than two minutes away. Funnily enough, I didn’t even know Google reviews were a thing back then. But if I had left one, it would’ve been an easy 2-star review.
Anyway, that brings me to the point: management changed again, I think only 2–3 years ago? And I can safely say, it’s gone back to how it was 15 years ago—a small and humble fish and chip shop.
Over the past 2 or 3 months, I’ve been going back regularly. I’ve had the plain steak sandwich, the Steakout sandwich (a steak sandwich with “the lot”), the chicken burger, and the burger with the lot. I haven’t tried their fish and chips yet, but let me just say—every item I’ve had has been great. My favourite? The Steakout sandwich.
It’s a steak sandwich with egg, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and tomato sauce. On this particular visit, I got the burger with the lot, and it reminded me of a classic homemade burger my mum used to make. Simple. Maybe boring by some people’s standards—but a classic. It tasted fresh and clean. No grit, no frills.
The beef patty reminded me more of a sausage. It wasn’t crumbly like a typical beef patty, but more like a sausage roll mince. Not bad at all. I was honestly more impressed with the egg — not too runny, and the yolk tasted great. The buns were freshly toasted on the underside and soft on top.
So, the burger in my eyes is quite decent. But if I had to recommend one thing, I’d say try their steak sandwich—especially the Steakout version. The steak is tender every single time, and it has that classic “homemade taste.” They use toasted sandwich bread, not buns or rolls, which makes it probably the most old-school version of a steak sandwich I’ve ever had.
Also worth noting: the prices are pretty reasonable. They’re about on par with other fish and chip shops. Sure, prices have gone up over the years, but not excessively so. I hope it stays that way because Blue Sea has made a huge comeback in recent years.
To think, there was a time I stopped going altogether. But that’s really all it takes — 2 or 3 bad experiences and… never again. I’m glad I gave it another chance. Give it a shot if you’re in the area.
Always Fresh, generous serves so much so that I now order just fish and potato cakes and they still always seem to toss in an extra 1 I don’t really need.. The crumbed fish is so good.
Best fish and chips in the area and our family ‘go to’ for last 5 years. The owners and staff and amazing humans and their food is always top notch. Support your local legends!
Ordered grilled barramundi.. because… need gluten free. Got crumbed unrecognisable fish. Not barramundi. And not for first time. Avoid this place
Easily the best fish and chips I have had in quite a while. Fresh, nicely grilled fish. Potato cakes and chips very nice. Prompt service.
