About
Newport Sea Catch is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in Newport, Victoria, with a strong reputation built on generous portions and consistently fresh cooking. Regulars describe it as one of the best chippies in the inner west, and with well over four and a half stars across a solid number of reviews, that praise carries real weight. The classic fish and chips is the signature here, and the chips in particular draw repeat visits for their crispy, non-greasy finish.
The menu goes well beyond the basics. A fish souvlaki and beef burger point to a broader range that keeps the whole family happy, and the kids’ menu adds another reason for groups to make the trip. Halal food is available, and gluten-free options are on offer too, with gluten-free battered fish available if you ring ahead. Dine-in seating makes it a comfortable spot for a sit-down meal, though takeaway is just as popular with the Newport locals.
Staff are noted for being friendly and quick, and the shop has a no-fuss, old-school feel that keeps people coming back year after year. Card and mobile payments are accepted, and free street parking is close by.
Phone ahead for gluten-free battered fish or to place a larger group order during the dinner rush.

Been going here for a few years now, and definitely the best chippy in the inner west.
Portion sizes are generous (photo shown is there minimum chips – more than enough for a family of 4, or 2 very hungry adults!), food is always well cooked and tasty, and the staff are always friendly.
Last trip involved chicken burgers, but we’ve had heaps off the menu (schnitzels, blue grenadier, king george whiting, etc) and everything has been good.
It’s not our closest chip shop, but happy to travel to get good quality food. Would recommend giving it a go.
We ordered delicious gluten free chips and gf fish (unbattered). Apparently you can order gf battered fish in advance. The chips were delicious as they we’re not too greasy. The staff were friendly and gave us an extra flake on the house. The prefer cash but you can also use card.
Good place! Big menu. My wife enjoyed her beef burger 🍔 I enjoyed my fish Souvlaki.
Absolutely delicious and fresh! The fish was perfectly cooked, chips were crispy, and the portions were generous. The staff were friendly and quick, and everything tasted so clean and fresh. Easily the best fish and chips in the area — highly recommend!
One of the last old school fish and chips shop.
Excellent service and foods was great. 👌
I visited Newport Sea Catch today for lunch with my daughter and I can honestly say it was one of the best fish and chip experiences I’ve had.
The food was absolutely amazing. Perfectly cooked fish with a light, crispy batter and beautifully fluffy chips. Everything tasted fresh and was served piping hot. You can really tell they take pride in the quality of their ingredients and preparation.
The owner Mohamad was incredibly friendly and welcoming, it felt like a place that genuinely cares about its customers.
See you guys soon!
Took my son out for a little lunch date today and we ended up at Newport Sea Catch and honestly, what a find.
The fish was beautifully golden with that perfect light crunch, and the inside was soft and flaky just the way it should be. The chips were hot, fresh, and fluffy the kind you keep reaching for even when you’re full.
You can taste the quality straight away. Everything felt freshly prepared and made with real care.
And the owner, Mohamad, was so welcoming and kind. It’s the type of place that feels genuine , good food, good energy, good people.
We’ll definitely be back soon.
WARNING to everyone: Do not buy fish and chips here
They use spoiled fish and their ingredients are not fresh. I had a very bad experience today. I ordered a medium chips and 3 flake. When I opened the box, the smell and taste were absolutely disgusting.
I took the food back to the shop for them to check, but they insisted that everything was normal. I told them this is not the first time I’ve eaten fish and chips, and what they served me was completely unacceptable.
They offered to make a new portion, but I refused because I did not want to risk eating spoiled fish again. I told them to keep it and eat it themselves.
Fortunately, my child had not tried the food yet otherwise, I don’t know if food poisoning could have happened.
I strongly warn everyone to stay away from this place.
