About
Gills Fish & Chips has built a strong reputation in Preston as a local fish and chip shop that takes both quality and dietary needs seriously. The signature gluten-free fish and chips have become a genuine drawcard, with coeliac-friendly options extending across the menu to include gluten-free potato cakes and gluten-free dim sims alongside the regular lineup. Regulars consistently note the crispy batter, moist fish, and chips that come out crunchy every time, even when taken home.
Flake features prominently on the menu, and the crumbed calamari rings and classic dim sims round out a solid range of traditional fish-and-chip-shop staples. The burgers also get a mention from those in the know, described as generously sized and well above average for this style of shop. Serves are large and prices are considered fair by the regulars who keep coming back.
The shop itself is casual and tidy, with dine-in seating available for those who want to eat on the spot. Takeaway and delivery are both options, and the space is comfortable for families with kids. Card and mobile payments are accepted, and free street parking is available nearby.
Gills operates Tuesday through Saturday, so it pays to check the hours before making the trip. For anyone in the Preston area looking for a fish and chip shop with genuinely good gluten-free options and consistent quality, this one is well worth putting on the list. Sadly, our experience was some of greasiest fish and chips we’ve had in a long long time.
We visited on a Tuesday (13 June 2023) as our usual joint Seanora round the corner wasn’t open.
Everything was gross and soggy with grease… almost to the point where was dripping. See the photos of the chips. We couldn’t eat most of it and had a very sad dinner.
All of the tater cakes got binned (usually my favourite part!). The fish batter had to be removed and discarded. The uneaten chips where thrown away (which has NEVER happened before in our house!).
Nice folks and hopefully the gang sees this and does better, but we won’t be back again. This quality was at a level where you don’t get a second chance.
The prior visit a few months ago was pretty good. We had no complaints that time.
Absolutely delicious The 1 box with the big piece of flake, chips, dim sum and potato cake was delicious.
The burger was home-made big piece of chicken, chips were delicious. Burger was delicious.
Incredible fish and chips – especially gluten free items! Friendly staff and lovely eating area. Coeliacs rejoice and make the journey to give it a try 🙂
Worst customer service ever….. I wouldn’t recommend going there. Most of the staff are extremely rude, though there’s one guy who seems polite and actually has some manners. The owner, who acts like the head chef, is incredibly unprofessional and the food quality has dropped badly. The chips are dry and tasteless. The previous management was much better in every way.
Some of the best feesh ‘n chips in Melbourne, with generally great chips and nice fish and surprising “F&C shop” burgers. Quality and consistency is generally great too, like anybody a new or job exp staff person may stuff up (today 50% of the chips were “dregs” that should have really been binned)
Drinks are pricey and prices are on the more premium end, but happy to spend the extra for something good and service is fast. Less impressed by the undisclosed 1.65% surcharge, get a new card payments provider guys.
Absolutely delicious fish and chips. We had battered flake, battered barramundi & chips with feta. Took them home & they were still hot & crispy. Large servings, fair prices & spotless shop.
Excellent fish n chips here. The chips are the best I have had in years. So happy to have found this place. The owners are really lovely too.
Really good fish & chips. Perfect batter, not too thick and not greasy.
