About
Preston Fish Bar is a well-known fish and chip shop in Preston, Victoria, offering dine-in, takeaway, delivery, and kerbside pickup across a casual, accessible venue. Free parking and a wheelchair-accessible entrance make it a practical choice for families and groups, and the kitchen runs from lunch through to dinner seven days a week.
The menu covers the classics: flake, dim sims, potato cakes, and chips in various sizes, alongside the Pirate Pack for those wanting a feed that covers more ground. The signature item is the Somethin’ Grilled barramundi, served with salad and sauce, which gives the menu a lighter option beyond the usual battered fare. Spring rolls also get a mention among regulars.
Reviews paint a mixed picture at present. Earlier visitors describe fresh fish in crispy batter and generous, fluffy chips, while more recent feedback raises concerns about portion sizes, particularly with the flake, and inconsistency across some dishes. Service is noted as quick, which suits the takeaway crowd. A change in ownership appears to have influenced opinions, and the shop seems to be finding its feet with newer patrons.
For anyone in Preston looking for a local fish and chips spot with a solid base menu, dine-in comfort, and the added convenience of delivery, Preston Fish Bar remains a practical option. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to confirm your order is ready.

Preston Fish Bar is a true standout for anyone craving delicious fish and chips. The fish is always fresh, perfectly cooked, and wrapped in a light, crispy batter, while the chips are golden and fluffy. The service is friendly and attentive, making each visit a pleasure. Whether you’re dining in or taking away, you can always count on high-quality, tasty food. Highly recommend this local gem!
Chips were okay, as were dimmies, one of the potato cakes had a foul taste to it, sorta like mould.
The flake was nice but super small, at nearly $10 each I’d expect a decent portion size rather than a bite-size. Dimmi placed near it for comparison.
I’ve always enjoyed Preston fish bar, but today I ordered food from DoorDash and was eating chips just to find a cooked moth on my chips, contaminated all of my food. I don’t want to be the person complaining but this is not okay. I understand you can’t control this things all the time but I feel it’s big enough to see. So disappointed and disgusted with my food today.
Under the previous owners this was my favourite fish and chip shop in the north, but the new owners sadly haven’t continued the same quality, effort or care with the food. The fish and seafood sticks and scallops tasted like they had been pre-fried then frozen and fried again; they had poor flavour and greasy.
I was such a happy regular but after this experience with the new owners I won’t return again.
I definitely don’t recommend, sadly. RIP preston fish bar
Didn’t realise this place had been taken over by new owners until we read the latest reviews. This place used to be great, but today the fish was tiny and dry – overpriced for what we received. Unfortunately we won’t return.
My fiancé and I ordered the “Somethin’ Grilled” barramundi 🐟 that is supposed to come with both a salad and a sauce. I requested no feta on just one of them, but when we picked it up, they let us know there wasn’t any salad in one as they couldn’t remove the feta – fair enough.
But we came home to find out that BOTH packs had just the barramundi fillet in a box, with no salad OR sauce in EITHER..
We did get compensated chips instead; which was an option instead of the salad, which was good.
But to top it off:
1. we attempted to call them multiple times (prior to ordering) to see if there could be changes to the salad, but they wouldn’t answer the phone
2. the barramundi was practically ice 🧊 cold 🥶
Overall, not a good experience and wouldn’t go back.
Got takeaway here the shop smells very bad like old oil and the fish had a pungent smell that wasn’t great.Has this shop got new owners? it was a great spot a year or so ago. Man who served me was very nice but won’t be returning now.
Unfortunately under new management. Chips were good but burgers weren’t the best and fish was refried. Only a seafood salad available. Shop environment not as nice as before. Very nice person serving. I won’t be back as this has seriously gone downhill, a bit sad as it was a great place for high quality fish and burgers.
