About
Gills and Grills is a casual fish and chip shop in Rowville, Victoria, serving lunch and dinner with both dine-in and takeaway options. The shop is well set up for families, with good seating, a kids menu, and full wheelchair accessibility including accessible parking and entrance.
The menu covers the classics well. Flake, chips, and potato cakes are regulars’ staples, and the steak sandwich has earned a strong following, with the meat reportedly tender and well-contained, which is more than can be said for most. The shop runs a tidy operation, with a docket system that gives customers an estimated wait time, something that keeps things moving smoothly during busy periods.
Feedback from regulars is a mixed bag. Many families have had enjoyable meals here, with the chips, flake, and potato cakes drawing repeat visits. Service is generally fast and the space is clean and welcoming. Some visitors, however, have found the fish portions and moisture levels inconsistent, so experiences can vary depending on the visit. It earns a solid four-plus stars across nearly 300 reviews, reflecting a shop that hits the mark more often than not.
Gills and Grills accepts credit cards, debit cards, and mobile payments, and free parking is available on-site. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to keep wait times to a minimum.

We have been here a few times during busy and quieter times and have found it average. There are some great reviews here which is why we have given it a few tries. We order the same thing at every F&C shop, flake, chips and potato cakes. Unfortunately we found the flake dry and bland. The batter is thicker than we prefer and on the chewier side than crispy. The chips were also on the dry side. I am usually one to devour chips that are soft on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside so I hated seeing most of the chips going to waste. I also found myself peeling off the batter on the potato cake as it was quite thick and heavy. Just under $50 for the family pack and we could only get through half, we really did try to enjoy it but it missed the mark. Perhaps will give the burgers a go next time.
On the positive side their service has been friendly despite busy periods and the store does have some seating.
Absolutely terrible service, I could barely barely understand the person taking the order over the phone and he clearly couldn’t understand me as the ENTIRE order is wrong, so unbelievably wrong it’s ridiculous, your better off going inside and ordering, both of my insanely simple burgers are totally wrong, I mean seriously I ask for no chess and sauce and I end up with a chicken burger? Total waste of money!! Food is average, portions are small for the price you are paying. Completely ruined myself and my family’s night. It would be nice if the owners could acknowledge this and make things right, thanks.
Best Steak Sandwich I’ve had in a long time. The meat actually stayed in the sandwich, which is rare.
Steak was tender too.
Had a pleasant experince ordering lunch at Gills and Grills. Chips, flake, potato cakes were very tasty! Enjoyable meal with the family.
Driest fish I have ever tasted in my life, fish portion average at best, chips not bad, but I will not be going back.
I’m a local and used to order all the time but since it went downhill a year ago or two I have stayed away. Quality of the food is not as good – I feel like they changed supplier. Ordered last week to give it another chance. Potato cake had no potato in it, it was all just crispy batter. Chips were dry. Crab sticks not as thick as they used to be. So disappointed!! Please go back to how it used to be!
Fast and efficient service and the shop is clean with good seating options. I appreciated the dockets they provide which denotes the estimated time your order will be ready. Sadly the quality and portion size of the fish and chips are average. My piece of Flake was small and thin and didn’t resemble freshly prepared but recooked resulting in the dryness. Chips are cheap catering style that are no better than you can buy in the supermarket freezer. Potato cakes were on the small side so luckily they threw in an extra one but slightly overcooked. Overall it was edible but nothing special. Whilst it’s an efficient business they let themselves down on quality of the products.
Always great service and great food..
