About
Surrey Hills Fish and Chips is a casual takeaway spot in the inner-eastern Melbourne suburb of Surrey Hills, serving lunch and dinner for locals after a reliable feed. The shop offers both takeaway and delivery, making it a convenient option for families across the area.
Snapper features on the menu and draws repeat visits, with regulars noting it comes in a decent size and cooked well. The chips have earned praise for being crunchy and well-seasoned, and potato cakes are another highlight, arriving crispy and salty when the kitchen is on form. Dim sims round out the classic fish and chip shop lineup. The pricing is considered reasonable, which adds to its appeal for family meals.
It’s fair to say the experience here can vary. At its best, this Surrey Hills fish and chip shop delivers the kind of satisfying, no-fuss meal that keeps locals coming back. On quieter or off nights, some have found consistency harder to pin down. The samosa is worth approaching with adjusted expectations, as it reads more like a deep-fried pastry than a spiced filling.
Families will find it an easy outing, with the shop being kid-friendly and delivery available for nights when staying home is easier. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to avoid a wait.

Worst fish and chips ever. The fish was so rubbery and hard to chew. Chips so bland and potato cakes so dry the oil must have been old.
Couldn’t finish and had to throw away. Find another place to eat.
Worst fish and chips I have had in a long time. Chips and everything else were soggy.
Tonight’s fish n chips were the best we have had for a very long time – well done Surrey Hills Fish and Chips. We really enjoyed the grilled snapper – decent size and cooked perfectly but also the chips and the dim sims – everything was crispy and perfect for a winter treat.
Quite possibly up there with the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Fish was dry and well overcooked. Chips were the same, as were the potato cakes. Lemon wedge was so tough it had no house in it. Will not be ordering again.
Doubt if they really know how to cook, the lady just add salt on the top and it’s extremely salty, but at the bottom no flavor
Be aware their ‘samosa’ is more of a deep fried english pasty. Not a single hint of curry or spices. Not what was expected, lacking a little in flavour but alright.
The rest of the food is good. Nice crispy, salty potato cakes especially.
Had to wait 50 minutes for my order. The worker was rude
The food was SPECTACULAR, I kid you not, the most amazingly crunchy chips, and very reasonably priced, even had snapper available, made my Kiwi heart sing
