About
New Cod on the Block Fish and Chippery has built a solid reputation in Tooradin, drawing locals and visitors alike with a menu that covers all the classics and then some. The fish and chip shop is well-regarded for its flake, potato cakes, and dim sims, all praised for their fresh produce and nicely executed batter. Scallops are a highlight too, consistently described as delicious and cooked with care.
The real strength here is the approach to gluten-free dining. A dedicated gluten-free menu and a separate preparation station mean coeliacs and those with gluten sensitivities are properly catered for, not just offered a token alternative. Gluten-free fish, potato cakes, dim sims, and nuggets have all drawn enthusiastic responses from families who know how rare that level of care can be.
The hamburgers deserve a mention too. A fully loaded burger at a very reasonable price point has impressed visitors who might not have expected that kind of value from a fish and chip shop. The casual dine-in area and outdoor seating make it easy to stay a while, and free parking adds to the convenience.
New Cod on the Block suits families, groups, and solo diners equally well, with a kids’ menu and wheelchair-accessible parking on site. It ranks among the better fish and chip spots in the South East Melbourne region, and the reputation is well earned. Phone ahead during busy dinner service to avoid a wait.

Beautiful flake and scolups, will not disappoint. The flake and scolups were delicious. I think anyone who loves their scallops and flake will enjoy ordering from here. I received fresh produce, nicely cooked, lovely batter, flake and scolups were a nice size, and not over cooked or murdered.
Now for the cons.
The batter was possibly a little bit oily. The potato cakes had very little potato. I wasn’t a fan of the chips, they were to dry for my liking.
I would certainly come here again, for the flake and scolups.
The grilled flake I bought was lovely, but it took some time to wait for it..I felt not enough staff perhaps, but I will give it another go because the fish was lovely.
One of the better fish and chip shops I’ve visited in recent years. Fried fish (blue grenadier), spring roll were great.
Had a seperate gluten free menu and dedicated station, so easily catered for my coeliac partner. Their gf schnitzel burger and chips were fantastic and gluten free bun just like a regular burger bun. Clearly a popular site (weekened) and wait time was longer than advised by was worth the wait.
Saddest piece of grilled blue grenadier I have ever seen. Fish came as seen in picture no love at all here. Potato cake was uncooked and soggy. Plus a long wait which they apologised for.
Wow …… just wow. What amazing food. My 2 little gluten free children were so
Happy with their nuggets snd chips. They tasted amazing.
We ordered gluten free fish , potato cakes and dim sims and they were all amazing.
My girls are already asking when we can go back.
Wow did not expect this place to be my first review. Won’t add photos as its looks like fish and chips sorta, but I can describe the whole place as an experience.
We ordered a wide range of items including burgers ,fish and chips packs and souvlaki.
First of all the people running it dont want to be there at all , no acknowledgent what so ever and standoffish,
Food was quickly ready
Food tasted pre cooked. Especially burgers.
Flake?
Maybe one or 2 of those pieces we revieved were flake. Taste was like doughy barely cooked batter and items.
Other than the pre-cooked items like potato cakes that were edible at best even kids did not finish them or have any chips so much oil…..
The chips . Sadly undercooked soft and tastless oily uncared for, could of made a mash out of it. And barely a handful @ best the amount of chips we got for a 100 dollar order was diabolical.
They have a gluten free menu which is appealing to those coeliacs out there BUT was THE worst tasting undercooked fish and chips I’ve tasted ever so much oil made it totally inedible!
My food experiences that i review can go only uphill from here on.
Took my American friends there today and all 4 of us raved how good the food was. It was reasonably priced too .the hamburger with the lot literally had the lot. Only $11 and a decent sized burger. Highly recommended .
Wow. Our go to place for gluten free fish and chips is no more.
Fish size was so much smaller than usual and tasted average. Son couldn’t even finish the fish. Dim sims…..smaller than they used to be and appeared no longer home made. Potato cakes so thin you could almost see through them. Chips under cooked and not a hint of the requested Chicken salt. So disappointed and will be finding another GF place. Sad to see such a decline in.food taste and quality
