About
Ionian Fish and Grill Bar is a casual dine-in and takeaway spot in Wonthaggi, serving the kind of fish and chips that regulars describe as a reminder of how good the dish used to be. The fish is praised for tasting genuinely fresh, and the chips have earned a loyal following among locals who rate them among the best they’ve had in a long time. The kitchen has a clean, well-organised feel that comes through in the food.
The menu follows the classic fish and chip shop format, so visitors coming in with expectations of Greek-style grilled seafood or Mediterranean specials may find it more traditional than the name suggests. The focus is firmly on the staples done well, and on a good day the shop delivers on that front with confidence.
Ionian caters well to families, with a kids’ menu and plenty of space for groups. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible, with an accessible car park, entrance, and seating, and free parking is available out front. Both dine-in and takeaway are on offer, along with outdoor seating for those who prefer to eat al fresco. The shop holds a solid four-plus star reputation across a healthy volume of reviews, which reflects a reasonable level of consistency for a Wonthaggi fish and chip shop of this size.
Worth a visit if you’re in the area and after a straightforward, no-fuss feed. Phone ahead during the dinner rush to avoid a wait.

Went in to see some Greek food but unfortunately there was nothing Greek on the menu. All regular fish and chips shop food. Was expecting grilled mixed seafood etc. Didn’t try anything.
Food was soggy the lady that served us I don’t think has smiled before. And they forgot our 1.25l drink and I have no idea why the chips were glowing yellow.. probably the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had.. I’ll be going to robs from now on. They are great..
Such lovely service, super quick and tasty.
As the reviewer, @John Godfrey correctly pointed out, “it’s a fish & chip shop, what more do you want?” Well to start with, good quality fish & chips!
The “battered” fish is not crispy batter but thick, doughy, pale covering over thin, grey, grainy fish, which is consistent with purchased pre-fried then frozen boxed product, not fresh battered, plump fish. The chips, even after the requested extra frying for crispness, were bland, hard and had a “radio- active” glow consistent from cooking with cheap cotton oil.
Disappointed as a change to higher quality ingredients would pay dividends.
Bought fish n chips last week from here and was happy with the food. This Sunday morning bought 2 hamburgers and really disappointed with the outcome. Firstly I turned up early 11.15am to person who didn’t really want to serve me, well that’s the impression I got. Then ordered two burgers plain. Was not happy with them. Couple strands of lettuce and the pattie with small dob of sauce. No onion or tomato. Most places give tomato now. But no onion, lol that’s not a burger. Guess I have to look for somewhere else now. Worst dry burger ever had. And Terrible customer service especially when I spent $40 there.
Great fish and chips! Kitchen looks very clean & well organised. Fish tastes so fresh and delicious and the chips are best Ive had in ages. This is what I remember fish and chips were like when I was a kid 🩵💙
Gluten free flake smelt funny – I don’t know if was too much oil cooked in or what but I took a bite and spat it out after thinking maybe it’s just fishy fish. Chips were very average. I did like the service but I won’t be going back cause the food.
First time we got fish ‘n chips – lovely. Next time 2 out of 4 fish not cooked properly! Yuk! Won’t go back.
