About
David Chippy’s Fish Cafe has built a solid reputation in Hocking as a reliable spot for quality fish and chips. The shop is takeaway only, situated on East Road, and draws a steady crowd for both lunch and dinner. Free parking makes it easy to swing by on a busy day.
The fish is the clear highlight here. Regulars point to the crispy, well-executed batter and the quality of the snapper as the main reasons they keep coming back. Portions can be generous, with some visits yielding extra pieces of fish in the bag, though experiences with chip quantities and seasoning can vary from visit to visit. The kids’ menu makes it a practical choice for families in the area.
Word of this Hocking fish and chip shop has even caught the attention of overseas visitors, with more than a few people noting it holds its own against anything they’ve tried elsewhere. That kind of praise, backed by a well-rated track record across a strong number of reviews, says plenty.
If you plan to phone ahead during a busy dinner service, be aware that noise inside the shop can make phone orders tricky. Pop in when you can. Worth a visit for anyone in the northern suburbs looking for a solid feed.

My UK family often joke about this being the best fish and chips in the word when they come over, but in all honesty can’t say we’ve had better anywhere else. Keep up the good work guys. Love this place!
I recently tried Chippy’s for the first time in a few years and was pleasantly surprised. The fish and chips were crispy, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The portions were also generous. The pricing was on-par with other fish and chip places in the area. The service was friendly and i was provided with an accurate wait time when i placed my order over the phone. I also really appreciated the cook wearing a hair net, and other staff wearing masks and gloves. The cleanliness behind the counter and shop looked great. I will be recommending this place and going back in the future.
I ordered fish, squid and chips. I don’t know how someone thought this was acceptable to bag up. The squid was broken apart and overcooked so hard it was tough like a dehydrated jerky squid, fish was overcooked and chips were as well. Average at best but no one should be thinking that squid is worthy of serving just by looking at it. Went at 5:30 on a weekday when it wasn’t busy.
First time customer.
No salt or vinegar on the food we paid nearly $60 for. Tasted very very average. Couldn’t finish it as no flavour and just average tasting.
Called the next day and spoke to someone who could hardly speak English and wasn’t any help to my complaint. Normally good customer service they rectify it for you, give you money back or they remake it for you.
Disappointed, expensive, average tasting and especially because they never put salt or vinegar on.
The amount of chips was like buying chips back in 1999. and the fish was delicious and crunchy batter and good sized.
On the downside Paid for 2 serves, typically gets you 2 pieces of snapper per serve. But Got 3 pieces only in the bag, while I usually like extra crunchy chips they were on the nearly burned and very dry side of cooked. No lemon or tartare included like you might find elsewhere. Was very difficult to make out what was said during the order due to poor phone call quality. Hope nex
