About
Sealanes Cafe is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in South Fremantle, open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner with both dine-in and takeaway available. The casual setting includes outdoor seating, free parking, and wheelchair access, making it an easy stop for families and solo diners alike.
The menu leans toward quality over quantity. Spanish mackerel is the default fish, and regulars appreciate the freshness of the seafood across the board. Snapper is another popular choice, served with a light, clean batter and complimentary tartare sauce and lemon. The chips are consistently crunchy, and the seafood basket draws plenty of repeat orders. Specialty items lift the menu beyond the expected, with dishes like Melaleuca Farm wagyu fat potatoes with Geraldton wax maple, chive, and sour cream offering a more considered take on a classic side. Seasonal dishes round out a menu that shifts with what’s fresh.
Prices sit a touch higher than the average suburban fish and chip shop, though most regulars find the quality warrants it. Portions are generous enough on the seafood, though snapper servings lean on the smaller side. The overall experience is relaxed and family-friendly, with card and mobile payments accepted and no bookings required.
For anyone after solid fish and chips in the South Fremantle area, Sealanes Cafe is a comfortable option worth the visit. Check opening hours before heading in.

I really enjoy getting my fish and chips from this place.
The fish and seafood are always fresh. The seafood basket is delicious. They use Spanish Mackeral as the default fish, which is my favourite.
The chips are crunchy and cooked to perfection. Some tables are provided, a small grassed area is outside, or you have South Beach across the road.
Check their opening hours and days. Seasonal changes to their times exists.
A bit of a walk from the train station but worth the hike.
I had snapper and chips for $22.
Nice, light batter and the fish was fresh and cooked well. The chips were good.
Comes with complimentary tartare sauce and lemon.
Cans of cool drink are $2 which is great value.
Warm service.
Would definitely come back. Tastier and more affordable than C & K at fishing boat harbour.
The Melaleuka Farm Wagyu fat potatoes, Geraldton wax maple, chive, sour cream, would not have been my usual go to as I don’t like a lot of sweet things, but these potatoes were the perfect combination of sweet & savoury. Now the hiccup!
It’s this point the ‘wheels fell off a little’. As we were looking at the potatoes left in the serving bowl, we found an unwelcome addition – a hair, darker than mine & under the potatoes. Not impressed. We waited for the service staff to return & let them know quietly of or unhappy find. We had placed the hair on one of the small paper menus & passed it to her. She was very embarrassed & apologetic. She advised she would feed it back to the kitchen, returning a little while later; again apologised & offered us a replacement dish which we declined. as we’d finished our meal.
We were left alone for a little while & we relaxed, enjoyed our drinks & chatted for a while. It was great to sit back & relax.
Onto the dessert menu. We thought we might split a dessert. They have a unique & creative dish, the Iced VoVo, coconut white chocolate biscuit, white chocolate parfait, strawberry granita, coconut.
Neither of us like white chocolate, but upon hearing the feedback from both staff we decided to give it a go. The problem with that was there were two other options we were considering; so, we threw caution to the wind & ordered two additional items, a total of 3 dessert dishes! The Iced VoVo did not disappoint. Refreshing and light with only a hint of sweetness. No overpowering white chocolate flavour & the parfit, gorgeously chilled and when a combination of all the ingredients were carefully spooned into your mouth – simply WOW! Chefs kiss!! We then attacked the Strawberry shortcake. This was perfectly constructed with the right amount of strawberry, cream, shortbread & rose meringue, with a hint of lemon as you finish. Now onto the Rum ball. Thick dark chocolate shell & when bitten, dark, rich chocolate cake explodes with spiced rum in your mouth. The rum is a very subtle taste & certainly not the rum balls of old. This was quality and it showed.
When we ready to leave & pay our bill, the staff again apologised for the wayward hair, & this is where I felt a little let down. Not once did they offer to ‘comp’ the offending dish even though we sent more than half back. I do feel like this issue was more an exception to the overall quality food. We will be back, but maybe next time, try a different dish or two. I would recommend this restaurant as a must do, even if only once a year as it was a $248.00 lunch.
Such a disappointment. Opted for the Grilled Mackerel and side of chips. The tiniest fish portion, and at $17.50 did not reflect value for money. Quality was ok. A bit overcooked/dry. And the chips were atrocious.
YMMV ( I hope it does) but nah for me.
Far better portion size and quality from half a dozen venues within a 5 minute drive.
Service was ok. Wait time was ok. ‘Patio’ was barely OK. Food needs attention.
Snapper and chips was great, smallish portion on the fish but it’s quite rich so you can’t eat that much anyways. Might be more expensive than other fish and chip shops but overall very pleasant. Would give 4.3-4.5 stars
Whilst the fish and chips are fantastic – the service is appalling. It says online (and in the shop) that this place closes at 8pm. We turned up at 7.40pm and were queuing for 10 minutes before the cashier told us he was only ‘allowed to take 3 more orders’ – we were the fourth. We queued for no reason and changed to plans in order to get their on time. Bad attitudes from staff means we won’t return.
I come here often-the fish shop not cafe- to purchase fish for myself & elderly parents (when I can afford it). The fish is no doubt fresh but incredibly over priced- maybe catering for the local elite; definately not locals The service is lousy & often provided with attitude…’who knows what goes on in the minds of men’, as Shakespeare once lamented. The guy couldn’t even push my parcels across the counter, after I had purchased fish & crabs. Perth used to be friendly & offer positive service but not here.
Smallest piece of fish ever $17.50 and they charge extra for chips. Disappointed, guess I’ll stick to my local in future!
