About
Old Salty’s is a casual fish and chip shop in Ashgrove that has built a strong reputation among locals for generous portions, quality ingredients, and approachable prices. With well over four and a half stars from over a hundred reviews, it’s one of the better-regarded spots in the area for a relaxed, no-fuss meal.
The menu features crumbed barramundi with a crispy exterior and soft, flaky interior, along with calamari and fried pineapple that regulars speak of fondly. Chip serves are notably generous, and the pricing is considered excellent value for what’s on the plate. Food is cooked fresh to order, so there can be a short wait during busy periods, but most find the result well worth it.
The space has a rustic feel, and outdoor seating adds to the laid-back atmosphere. Dine-in and takeaway are both available, with card and mobile payments accepted. No reservations are needed, and the venue is family friendly, making it an easy choice for a weeknight dinner or a casual weekend lunch. Free street parking is available nearby, though the shop can get busy and spots fill up during peak hours.
Old Salty’s is open for lunch and dinner, so phone ahead if you’re planning a larger order during the dinner rush.

Great fish and chips! Crumbled barramundi that is crispy outside and soft inside. Nice calamari, fried pineapple and most of all, huge servings of chips at excellent prices. All food melt in mouth. Will come to this place again. Top quality stuff.
I don’t usually review so that’s how you know it’s good in quality. It has great serving sizes, great quality food, great customer support, and there are honestly no downsides to this place, except for the occasional delay when you order sometimes, which is usually expected. No fish and chips place has gotten close to the quality of food here in my opinion, and it is a must-have, if you want to go to a fish and chips place.
Worst fish and chips I have had and at a premium price. $67 for a family pack of 4 tasteless cod (don’t think it was even cod), soggy chips, 2 potato scallops, calamari and 4 prawn cutlets. Can get 3 quality sit down meals at any pub or club around for that with a beer! Would never go back!!!
A lot of good reviews so we tried it on a Tuesday night. We were the only customers so it wasn’t a bust time. We ordered crumbed barramundi which was ok but slightly overcooked, the crumb was quite dark and crisp. The chips were ok but similar to the fish, quite dark and slightly overdone. I’d give our meal a 3.5 rating. We may have just gone on a bad night.
This is what fish and chips should be. Good, tasty, well cooked, reasonably priced, and good service. The shop is rustic, this is true, but its the ambiance that’s great.
Outstanding service & great food — all around a really positive experience.
Food is cooked fresh to order, portions are well-sized and affordable for all.
Will definitely be back again!
I have had chips and potato scallops from Old Salty’s before and they tasted amazing! Last night we went in to order and had to wait over half an hour for dinner, however, it is just a one man run business, so we cut him slack. This time round the scallops and chips were undercooked but still yummy. Good amount for the price.
Great take away option with chill staff. Can get quite busy in the area. Which can make finding a parking spot difficult.
