Hands down the best fish and chips in West End. Most consistent and best value around. Always great service too staff are exceptional. Always give such a big serve of chips for a great price, you just can’t argue with Thalassina.

Since moving to the West End suburbs, it’s only natural to want to explore and learn more about the local community. Hunting down authentic eats is, of course, one of the best ways to settle in and feel part of the neighbourhood.

One day, I happened to be passing by the corner of Gray Road and Hoogley Street when I spotted a shop called Thalassina Fish & Chips. A quick search told me that “Thalassina” comes from ancient Greek, meaning “of the sea” or “marine.”

The shop itself is pretty low-key—no fancy fit-out—but come evening, it’s always packed with people, not an empty seat in sight! So today, I thought I’d pop in during the quieter hours, around 4 pm, to try their food. The staff were all smiles and super friendly. With so many options on the menu—and plenty of fish and seafood names I didn’t recognise—I asked for their recommendation and ended up ordering a mixed seafood platter for two.

The moment I opened the box, I was hit with the amazing aroma of freshly fried seafood. And the portion? Massive! One bite in, and I could tell how fresh the fish was—tender, flavourful, and juicy. No wonder they’ve got such high ratings on Google and are known as the best fish and chips in the West End! Honestly, it gives some of Brisbane’s well-known seafood restaurants a real run for their money.

I’ll definitely be rounding up a few mates to head back soon. Just a heads-up—don’t rock up on a Monday or Tuesday, they’re closed. Wouldn’t want you to find yourself staring at a locked door!

We ordered the fish burger, grilled snapper and Greek salad, and everything was ridiculously delicious. The place was immaculately clean, and I’ve never had a fish shop meal that tasted so fresh and healthy. We’ll definitely be back and would highly recommend it.

We ordered the Seafood Platter for 1, Triffle and Caesar salad. Very enjoyable and great servings. The fish pieces were crunchy and meaty. Chips were not soggy. There was plenty to share between my wife and I. The salad was crisp with lots of flavour. Triffle was beautiful especially with the coconut topping.
We sat on the park just near the West End ferry terminal and enjoyed this beautiful meal with a great view of the river and its surroundings. Recommended this establishment for a wonderful meal and great service.

The Old Bait & Switch — literally. 28/2/26

Was looking forward to some quality fish, so after perusing the choices I requested the Sweetlip. Cost was not a concern; only quality. Because there are a few suboptimal versions of Sweetlip, I specifically asked if the Sweetlip variety was “Red Throated Emperor”— an outstandingly superb table fish, as good as any of the prized reef fish. I was assured emphatically and most enthusiastically that it was same. It was a pickup. I couldn’t wait to indulge. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that my eagerly anticipated reef fish was at best Morwong. In any case it was of extremely poor quality.
Of course the remedy is simple : never return. Is there anywhere in Brisbane one can buy quality fish? I don’t mind paying for it.

The fish and chips are really tasty; it’s the sauces that ruined it for me 🙁 I ordered tartare sauce with my fish and chips and sadly the consistency of the sauce wasn’t what I’m used to. Tartare sauce is suppose to be creamy, mayonnaise-based. The sauce served was very jelly like. I thought maybe it’s just the tartare sauce that wasn’t the best so I went and ordered some mayonnaise after and I receive the same texture of mayo so I figured perhaps the same mayonnaise is used for tartare sauce. I’ve also read that if homemade mayonnaise turns out like jelly, oily and thin, it means the oil did not properly emulsify with the egg yolk – maybe it was homemade and it was that? Not sure, I’ll be back but will need to bring my own sauce!
