About
North Balwyn Fish & Chips is a well-regarded fish and chip shop serving the Balwyn North community for lunch and dinner, with no bookings required. Dine-in, takeaway, and delivery are all on offer, making it straightforward to enjoy a feed however suits the occasion. Free parking is available on the street and in a nearby lot, and the car park is wheelchair accessible.
The menu leans into the classics, and regulars keep coming back for good reason. The chips are a clear highlight, consistently described as golden and crispy rather than the soggy, frozen variety that lets so many shops down. The fish arrives in a thin, well-seasoned batter that delivers real flavour and crunch. Serves are solid, and the dim sims draw their fair share of fans too.
First-timers who arrive a little uncertain tend to leave converted. The friendly service helps, and the consistency across visits is the kind of thing that turns a one-off stop into a regular habit. For families in the area, it ticks all the right boxes: easy parking, welcoming atmosphere, and a menu that covers the essentials without fuss.
For anyone searching for fish and chips in Balwyn North that delivers reliably on the basics, this shop is well worth adding to the shortlist. Check the hours below and consider calling ahead during the dinner rush.

Portion size was good for me, but the fish was a bit thinner than most places. Chips were golden and perfect. Fish batter was thin but very tasty and crisp. Very good!
We always purchase our fish and chips here, having tried many other fish and chip shops in the area over the years. The fish (battered) and chips are consistently very good. The dimmies are good too. We aren’t fond of potato cakes so don’t purchase them. We order by phone and they are normally ready within 15-20 minutes (tonight was only 10 minutes).
I’m always reluctant when trying new fish & chip shops but was in the area and hungry. Well I was not disappointed, fresh and well cooked, really good batter and salt & vinegar condemnation available. Nice friendly people and will definitely call again when next in the area. Thank you 5⭐👍
Always reluctant to try fish and chips because almost all of them use crappy frozen chips that are more soggy than crispy.
Chips here were 10/10, best ones i’ve had in many years.
Fish was a little thin but was still top quality.
Would recommend to give it a crack
This place was a trial test – and was a successful one. The fish n chips, fried and steamed dimsims, chiko rolls, spring rolls, fried scallops, sausage in batter and calamari rings were all very good as to expect. They were not oily drained well, flake fish is flaky and batter is good, chips were frozen but good, everything was good as the oil used is decent and not making your food look fluorescent yellow like other places I experienced. This place makes good fish n chips. Only one experience where we received slight over fried food. Also price is reasonable as compared to other more expensive places.
Visted on a Monday night. Service was good. Shop empty.
Chips seemed full of oil though… we couldn’t eat a small chips.
We bought family pack 1 and seafood pack last night. All five of us had diarrhoea this morning. Will never want to go back again.
I have called the shop, and asked for a refund. They remembered our purchase, but defensive, and declined our request. That’s fine, good luck.
I ordered a flake, some potato cakes and chips the other night. I shared the fish with my pup, and woke in the morning to her having had diarrhoea and vomited all over our floor. My stomach also didn’t feel great. She hadn’t eaten anything else but her usual kibble all day, so unfortunately I’m very sure it was the fish.
I won’t be going back unfortunately
