About
Balaka Place Fish Shop has been a fixture in Bundoora for a long time, and locals keep coming back for good reason. The fish and chips here have a loyal following, with regulars consistently rating the flake as fresh and the batter properly crispy in the old-school tradition. Potato cakes are another highlight, and the chip portions are noted as generous without pushing the price up. For anyone watching the budget, the value on offer is a genuine draw in a time when takeaway costs keep climbing.
The shop is takeaway only, which keeps things simple and the queue moving. Service is casual and relaxed, and free parking means no fuss on arrival. Families are well catered for, and the shop is open for both lunch and dinner. One thing worth knowing: card payments are not accepted, so bring cash.
For anyone in the Bundoora area looking for a fish and chip shop that keeps things traditional and unpretentious, Balaka Place is a strong option. It holds a well-rated reputation built on honest, consistent cooking rather than anything flash. See opening hours below and phone ahead during the dinner rush.

They definitely make very good FNC here! Grilled fish is still cooked in a very light batter but we like it this way, You may need to ask for then to cook differently if you want absolutely no coating on your fish The chips are always fresh and crispy. Have had a hamburger here as well, which has also been deliciously hearty. The owners/server is kind, reserved and friendly. Yes they only take cash, but it’s worth a trip to the ATM beforehand in my opinion. This place has been consistently good for the past decade at least.
For 27 years, Marco, the local legend and beloved celebrity, has been serving up the best fish and chips in town. His dedication to quality and passion for his craft shine through in every golden, crispy piece of fish and every perfectly cooked chip. The welcoming atmosphere and Marco’s friendly presence make every visit special, solidifying this joint as a community staple. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, Marco’s Fish and Chips promises a delicious, nostalgic experience you won’t forget.
I have lived in the Bundoora area for a very long time. I haven’t been to this fish and chip shop only because they don’t accept card payments. When I want takeaway I want it to be quick, easy and convenient at the time. However on this occasion I had actually planned on takeaway for dinner and I therefore had time to plan and get cash. Anyway I was definitely not left disappointed. The flake was so good as were the chips and potatoe cakes. My son got a hamburger with the lot and he said it was the best he ever had. My mum got a souvlaki and she complained that it wasn’t very good. I think the shop itself looks very rundown and probably hasn’t had a face lift in 20 years but I don’t care because it tasted so good. Two people working I’m guessing the owner and an assistant and they were very lovely people. It was a little more expensive than other places in the area and the general going rate but I’d rather pay a little more for quality. In the future I will definitely go out of my way to get to an ATM to pay for their F&C as it is well worth it imo
After searching for local Fish and Chips shops in Epping, I stumbled upon Balaka fish shop. The fish was amazing, and the chips and potato cakes were perfect. After going without fish and chips for over a year, I have finally found something reasonably priced, and worth the drive.
Absolutely hands down the best fishos I’ve had in ages! If you want traditional old school fishos then this is by far the best!
Got hamburger with lot . Very soft roll fell apart abit . Bacon I thought was hard an chewy tasted not so good. It needed more lettuce to make it fresher an tomato sloppy . I would not be back for another one. Everything cooked too long in my opinion
Our absolute favourite go to fish and chips! With several fish and chip shops near by this is the absolute stand out, and always our first preference!
Started 2026 with fish and chips and a souvlaki . In a world of increasing prices this shop continues to provide a great feed at a good price . Now that’s a piece of fish ! Plenty of chips as well . Continues to provide (made my own salad out course )
