About
Captain Cookes Fish n Chippery has built a solid reputation in Doreen’s northern suburbs, drawing regulars back with fresh, well-prepared seafood and friendly service. The fish and chip shop is known for its light, crispy batter and quality flake, which is a consistent highlight for those who visit. Potato cakes come out golden and tasty, and the chips are reliably crisp. The menu also features dim sims, seafood sticks, and an Aussie Burger, giving the menu genuine range beyond the classics.
One thing that distinguishes this shop from the typical takeaway is the option to have your fish served with brown rice and salad, a healthier alternative that regulars appreciate. Staff are noted for being kind and courteous, and the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere suits both quick solo lunches and family dinners. Dine-in and takeaway are both available, and delivery is offered for those nights when heading out isn’t on the cards. The venue is family-friendly with a kids’ menu, and parking is easy with both free street parking and a free car park on site.
Captain Cookes is open six days a week, including Sundays and Mondays, which is handy given how many fish and chip shops in Victoria take those days off. For anyone in Doreen or the surrounding area looking for a reliable feed, the shop delivers on quality most of the time. The occasional portion size has drawn a comment or two, so those ordering for larger appetites should make their requirements clear.

Paid $30 hoping for a nice piece of barramundi with a side of chips and salad.
Left with a decent sized portion of salad but the fish, being the main section of the meal was a thin half fillet. The salad is nice but I ordered for the fish and barely got a mouthful. Not impressed. When I order a main of fish I expect the main to be the fish. Not the slapped together sides. After I pulled the skin of to eat said half fillet I was left with absolutely nothing at all
More than your usual fish and chip shop! The shop was really nice and the service was friendly! The fish did not disappoint – the flake was delicious! It was nice to have an option of having it with brown rice and salad (which is what I chose) or chips and salad. Not many places have good fish and the option of brown rice. The pack also came with a wedge of lemon and I added the tartare sauce. Thank you Captain Cookes Fish n Chippery – really enjoyed my lunch!
First time visiting after reading the favourable reviews. Unfortunately also our last time. Pics of what I ordered vs what I received… Would have slightly compensated if the burger actually tasted of anything other than ketchup. Chips portion was palm size and no salt. When brought to the ladies attention, all she said was sorry and she’ll let the manager know the website needs to be updated with the actual photo 🙄
Food is delicious! The fish was fresh and grilled to perfection and the service was amazing. Staff are very kind and courteous. It’s definitely become our favourite fish and chip shop in the area
Really nice fish n chips, light batter, tasty potato cakes and crispy chips. Very happy with the food quality and friendly service. Open on Monday which is handy as that’s always when I crave fish n chips, and there are a couple of outdoor tables to eat at as well. A little more in cost than some other places but I’m happy to pay for good food and service. Definitely recommend 😊
This used to be the best fish and chips in the mernda/doreen area. For the price, the fish used to be generously sized and there was often an extra potato cake or dim sim thrown in to the order. Unfortunately over the last few months the quality has tanked. Hard. The Flake is now half the size it was a year ago and not any cheaper, chip portions are meagre, it’s nearly $4 for a single calamari ring, and the potato cakes which used to be pure perfection are just not brilliant anymore.
The last 2 times we have visited, our order was cold, dim sims were over done and sloppy the potato cakes were raw and pale. The fish tasted good, but it was small. Such a shame, because captain Cookes used to be a real treat for our family.
Ordered 3 scallops, the gave me what was meant to appear as four… but really it was 2 meat parts and 2 bladder parts battered all separately! So I payed for 3 but got 2 in total. Pretty shifty guys!! Also the young guy there with the dark hair tonight…. we payed for grilled flake which is extra, and you gave us all fried. Pay attention mate…. especially when I said me name is Jim and the order was for jen2, that’s not even a bloody name! See ya, won’t be back 👎 This place went down hill fast
To say I will never step foot back in this place again is an understatement! I got the family pack for my family and I really wish I got pizza instead! Undercooked, oily and tough fish, the potato cakes were not cooked through properly and the chips looked like they had been sitting in the oil basket for at least a few hours! The only thing edible was the dim sums! Called up to let them know how horrible the food was and requested a part refund as I then had to go get more food for my family to eat for dinner that night and the cost of the fish and chips itself was outrageous! Only to be told bu what I can only assume was a 16 year old boy that he could “go ask the manager but I probably wouldn’t be getting a refund” are you kidding me! the only thing I was offered was a credit on file! Why on earth would I want a credit when I will not ever put my family through such horrible food again! My family have now woken up this morning sick, nauseous and with diarrhoea! STAY AWAY FROM THIS FISH AND CHIP SHOP! It is also under new management! I hope the manger sees this review and thinks again about how to run a business!
