About
Conway Fish Trading is a fish-and-chip shop and seafood market operating in central Footscray, offering a broader range than most standard takeaways. Alongside the classic fish and chips pack, the menu extends into fresh oysters, prawns, scallops, rockling, crab legs, and frozen seafood goods. Dim sims, calamari strips, and potato cakes round out the cooked takeaway side, and a Family Tackle Box pulls several of these together into a solid shared meal.
The dual nature of the business sets the tone here. Locals pop in for a quick cooked order, while others leave with bags of fresh and frozen seafood at prices that tend to surprise first-timers. The oysters in particular draw consistent praise for freshness, and the rockling has won over more than a few newcomers to the area. Staff have shown flexibility with customers when things go sideways, which goes a long way.
Dine-in and delivery are both available alongside takeaway, and the shop is family friendly. Wheelchair-accessible parking and entrance make it easy for all visitors, and card and mobile payments are accepted. Reviews are a mixed bag overall, pointing to some variability in product quality and service depending on the day, so it pays to know what you’re after before you arrive.
For anyone in Footscray who wants a fish and chip shop with genuine seafood market depth sitting alongside it, Conway Fish Trading is worth exploring. Check opening hours before heading in, particularly if you’re after fresh stock.

Conway Fish Trading is a well known Footscray institution providing the freshest and highest quality seafood for over 50 years.
At their Hot Fish store the selections here are impressive, options such as skewered garlic prawns, grilled or battered fish variety’s, mussels, fritters, burgers, and of course your good old fashioned fish and chips. 🐟
We ordered the Family Tackle box and I can confirm you will need a family to tackle it 😂 It was packed with everything you can think of, such a generous serving for only $32. The batter was really good but the chips lacked crispiness. When we come back to try more of the menu, we will ask for them extra crispy. 😛
Right next door they have their Fresh Fish store, where namely you can purchase all variety’s of fresh seafood, European goods and frozen foods. You can also order these goods online for delivery.
An institution in ‘the West’ and potentially the most well known fish trading business in Victoria.
You can walk in or order online, the later becoming more popular these days.
Next door is Conways Hot Fish Cafe where you can order fish, chips and other delicacies and eat at the tables outside.
Used to be known for long queues at Christmas, but these days with extended trading hours the “rush” is less a problem a big plus is that you can order online on a very user friendly website.
The range of seafood is abundant and fresh, particularly because of the high turnover.
Whether you’re looking for shellfish, molluscs or whole fish, there is plenty of choice. Fish fillets include tuna, swordfish, marlin, salmon, ocean trout etc, including the condiments that go with seafood, you’ll can get it here.
As well as selling fresh seafood, there are frozen options ready packaged up for those ‘on the go’.
As well, the store stocks a variety of grocery items such as sauces, spreads, wine, oil, lentils, cheese, dips and more.
Staff are very helpful and friendly. Prices are competitive and produce displayed in an appealing manner.
Wheelchair accessible. Parking plentiful out the front.
Highly recommend.
WOW, this is an amazing find for me. I went there because I wanted scallop shells to serve food. I came out with so much!!! Delicious oysters, Scallops, both frozen and fresh, red crab legs. The prices are so much less than I have been paying! And the staff are so helpful and friendly and justifiably proud of their organisation. The person who served us proudly told us that the business had been there for 60 plus years and that at Christmas the cues where outside and down the street. I lovely experience I will be repeating often.
If I could give this place more stars I would! I finished late yesterday (23rd) and they were still open, however in my fatigue I bought raw prawns not cooked, they allowed me to exchange, and even let me come back in after they were closed just to do this! If it wasn’t for their hospitality my Christmas tomorrow would have been tarnished (4kg of prawns going to waste is alot!) I cannot thank them enough and genuinely will never buy my fish from anywhere else! If you need excellent customer service and great value, come to Conway
To the lovely gentlemen and lady from today, from the bottom of my heart thank you
Absolutely appalling experience.
We purchased oysters from Conway Fish Trading on Christmas Eve after being personally recommended to shop there. When opened on Christmas morning, the oysters smelt strongly of rotten feet and were completely inedible. I froze them so I could return after the public holidays.
I contacted Conway’s on Tuesday 6 January and spoke to Mary, who was unbelievably rude. She laughed at my complaint and said they “sell thousands” and that no one else had complained. I left my details and was told a manager would call me back — that never happened.
When I called again on Thursday, Mary answered and immediately put me through to Demetris. His behaviour was disgusting. He raised his voice, bullied me on the phone, and said my complaint was “so ridiculous” that he couldn’t be bothered returning my call. This was over a dozen oysters costing $22.
I referred to Australian Consumer Law, which provides consumers with rights to a refund or replacement for faulty goods within a reasonable time. Demetris flatly stated that Australian Consumer Law “does not exist” and insisted oysters must be returned within 24 hours — meaning Christmas Day, which is completely unreasonable.
I was then told I had stored the oysters incorrectly and that they should have been removed from the bag and covered with a wet tea towel in the fridge. This information was never provided at purchase — no verbal advice, no signage, no leaflet.
What started as a recommendation has now turned into the opposite. Instead of standing behind their product, they chose to treat a customer with hostility and contempt. As a result, I am now actively warning others not to shop here. For the sake of $22, Demetris has effectively paid for significant negative word-of-mouth and poor reviews.
I strongly recommend going elsewhere — Queen Victoria Market or South Melbourne Market offer fresher seafood, larger oysters, and far better customer service. I will never shop here again.
Atmosphere yes! – we had fish n chips pack, seafood salad & a fish burger. Fish was giving rubber & hard 2/5, chips 4/5. Fish Burger 3/5 & seafood salad 3/5 (wasn’t too bad at all). Had better, was expecting quality in taste.
Being new to the area I decided to pop in and check out the range. Purchased oysters and rockling and some frozen goods. Wasn’t disappointed at all! The oysters were fresh and tasted great and the rockling was also super tasty and not rubbery. Will be back 👏
An interesting place on the outskirts of the main part of Footscray. I wasn’t in at the right time to buy some fish but can imagine if one lived locally this would be a great find.
I only tried some snacks (onion rings) from the attached cafe so can’t give a real rating for the fish and chips but apparently the fish cakes were top notch. There was lots of seating but only 1 table was in the shade. I can see myself revisiting when better prepared as the range of seafood is quite good. As a result I can’t give a full better rating or proper review but would highly recommend if you have a car, an Esky, and live nearby.
