About
Conway Hot Fish is a well-established fish and chip shop in Footscray, serving the local community for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The menu covers a solid range, from grilled fish and fried flake to battered fish and potato cakes, with the signature grilled fish with salad earning particular attention from those who prefer a lighter option. Calamari also features, and the shop’s online pre-ordering system makes pickup straightforward for busy regulars.
Dine-in and takeaway are both available, with outdoor seating on hand and full wheelchair accessibility. The shop is family-friendly, and the website draws praise for being easy to navigate when placing orders ahead of time. Service tends to be prompt, and at its best the kitchen turns out fresh, well-seasoned fish with a crispy batter and tender flesh inside.
Experience here can vary, and it is worth going in with that in mind. Some visits produce exactly what a Footscray fish and chip shop should deliver, while others have seen portions running smaller than expected, chips that lack crunch, or batter that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Freshness and presentation get a tick on the good days, and the grilled fish option is a reliable choice for those after something a little different from the standard fried fare.
Phone ahead or pre-order online to lock in your meal, particularly around the dinner rush on Fridays when hours extend a little later than the rest of the week.

Having read the reviews first I have to say that we were somewhat hesitant at first at trying fish n chips here today but being Conway, we decided to give it a shot for a latish lunch. Sadly it turned out to be ‘mostly’ a disappointment. Based on the reviews I gave the flake a miss and went for the Atlantic Salmon with 2 different salads and my partner had a skewer of garlic marinated prawns. We shared some chips. My grilled Atlantic Salmon was a good choice, it was tasty and juicy. However my salads were disgusting. My partner’s prawn skewer was average. The shoestring fries and not chips were throwaways, just tasteless. Lots of room for improvement here.
I usually don’t complain, but I felt I should give feedback since I’ve always gone here and recently even left a 5-star review because I felt bad about all the hate they were getting. Today, I ordered fish and chips, and the fish smelled awful and tasted rotten. We went back to ask for a refund or replacement, but they just pointed to their policy and said since we’d touched the food, there was nothing they could do. They didn’t care at all about feedback from a loyal customer. I wouldn’t recommend this place anymore—unless you’re looking for food poisoning. I won’t be coming back. Horrible food and experience.
Popped by as I was craving seafood chowder! Very delicious and full of flavour, would be good to get something on the side like bread, other than that, good! I had fish and chips , fish is battered waaaaay too much to the point, it feels like you are eating frozen fish with thick batter that is still floury. Chips are okay 😊
We stopped in for lunch recently and had the calamari tenders with chips and the greek salad. Calamari was pretty good but the chips were not very crisp. The greek salad was mainly iceberg lettuce and there was a lot of salad dressing (a bit too much for my taste). They have tables and chairs outside. We will go back again if we are in the area
This place seems to go downhill after each visit.
The fish and chips is not made to go. You can see most of the items pre-fried and the workers will just heat it up again once you order. This causes the fish to be overdone and tough.
Will return to the store next door for fresh fish but not for the hot food again.
Worst place I have been to ever the calamari was so burnt and the chips had no seasoning nothing at all, worst part they even tried to charge me for sauce on the side, it was like 15 for the worst chips and black calamari with no flavour at all. Stay away do not recommend the old lady was extremely rude also. Also fyi since you seem to be so Uneducated Maccas meals are now 17-20 which is more then your terrible food
I absolutely loved the Hot Fish! The food was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The seasoning had just the right balance of spice and taste, and the fish was crispy on the outside yet tender inside. The staff were friendly and served the food quickly. Definitely one of the best meals I’ve had — I’ll be coming back again soon!
My go-to fish and chips spot in Footscray! Heaps of options, super easy website, and you can pre-order online for pickup. Service was fast and great every time.
