About
Anna’s Fish & Chips has built a solid reputation on Hawthorn’s strip, earning well-rated reviews across hundreds of visits. The menu covers the classics done properly: flake, homemade potato cakes, and souvlaki sit alongside the shop’s signature deep fried mars bars, which are a genuine drawcard. Open for lunch and dinner, Anna’s caters to dine-in, takeaway, and delivery, making it a practical option for families, quick weekday meals, or a more relaxed sit-down.
The food is widely praised for its freshness and affordability. Regulars favour the homemade potato cakes in particular, and the flake draws consistent praise for flavour. Service gets a strong mention too: the front counter staff are attentive and remembered for looking after their regulars. For a fish and chip shop in Hawthorn, that kind of personal touch is what keeps people coming back week after week.
A few notes for first-timers: tartar sauce and lemon are available but need to be ordered separately. Batter crispness can vary slightly depending on the rush, so heading in during a quieter period tends to give the best result. Catering is also available for larger orders, which is handy for events or group meals.
Anna’s is family-friendly, accepts card and mobile payments, and keeps things casual. Phone ahead for orders during the dinner rush.

Went there on Easter Saturday because most of the shops were closed. Ordered Baraamunndi, chips and a chicken souvlaki. The Baraamunndi fillets were well done, crispy with the right amount of batter. But chips were under-cooked, maybe because the chips were all fried in the same basket underneath the fillets, I had to put them in oven once I got home because they were soggy. The chicken in the souvlaki was good, tender and juicy but the wrap was soaked in oil so tasted and smelled quite greasy.
I have eaten a lot of fish and chips in my life, and Anna’s fish and chips is definitely one of the best I’ve ever had. The guy at the front counter is a legend too, definitely a business you wanna support.
You will get tasty fish and chips but not the melt in your mouth, succulent fish and super tasty chips that you get at the 5/5 rated takeaways. No lemon quarter or tartar sauce included, need to buy separately. Good if rushing but not the sort of place you would visit each month religiously.
Authentic fish and chips, done the right way. Fantastic flavour, and even better service! From souvlakis to even just the home made potato cakes, the food is great and affordable. Very rare to find a Fish and Chips experience like this anymore anywhere!
I had flake and potatoe cakes. The fish was so dry and the potatoe cakes were soggy … very disappointing! I rang to give some feedback but the guy hung up on me. Save your money and go elsewhere!!
Until today! ???
What happened to the nice hot flake with thin, crispy batter? Today it was kind of doughy, and the flake was barely warm and also quite dry. Thinking back, I realise the proprietor didn’t actually deep fry the flake for me – as in the past — but gave me flake that was pre-cooked and waiting. I think he may have put it in a microwave or else it was for an order that was late to pick-up. VERY disappointing! Today really only deserves 2 stars, but I’m giving 3 for past performance.
I don’t know what all the fuss is about. I drove past my usual fish and chip place in Glenferrie rd, Malvern. An extra 10 minutes. Annas was mediocre fish and chips. Batter was soggy and doughy. My order was so tightly wrapped nothing was crisp. Disappointed.
Edit: So you will see Anna’s response to my review below. No apologies for subpar product. I had thought they were supposed to be worth the extra drive, but now I know not to bother. What I took from their response is that they know they are not competing for your business. You want fish and chips? If they are the closet to you, you will go there, not up to Hawthorn. No promises to do better, or work out how to ensure the batter is light and crisp. Stay stodgy and hope you don’t realise you have choices.
