About
Kensington Fish & Chips is a well-rated fish and chip shop serving the Kensington community with the kind of old-school Australian hospitality that’s hard to find these days. Generous portions, fresh ingredients, and a relaxed casual atmosphere have kept locals coming back, and with over 300 reviews to its name, the shop carries a solid four-plus star reputation earned over many visits.
The menu leans into quality, with barramundi, flathead, calamari, and prawns all on offer alongside a fish basket and homemade tartare sauce. The battered fish is consistently praised as fresh and not at all greasy, and the potato cakes are a firm favourite among regulars. Chips are seasoned well and the serves are notably generous. Sustainable sourcing and locally sourced ingredients underpin the menu, which lifts it a notch above the average suburban fryer.
The shop is open for both lunch and dinner and caters well to families, with a kids’ menu available. Service is quick despite the shop often drawing a crowd, and staff are known for slipping in a little something extra without being asked. That kind of thoughtful touch is part of what keeps the neighbourhood returning. Both dine-in and takeaway are available, and free street parking makes the stop easy for those passing through.
Phone ahead during the dinner rush to avoid a longer wait, or simply head in and enjoy the full experience on site.

Where are all the good old days fish and chips store you ask ? Well it’s right here , Kensington Fish & Chip is a cracker ! Delicious food , very generous portions and old school friendliness along with a little extra customer service !
Will be back and highly recommend!! Thanks 🙏
Stop by around just to try the fish and chips, And it was so good ⭐️
the service was good, put extra salt and seasoning on your chips, or any sauce to make it more tastier! ⭐️
Snarky shopkeepers who always look out the window, burgers are bland and the chips are soggy and downright make you sick afterwards… Even had a hair inside my burger which for $12 I could get a better one elsewhere
I really like this family run fish and chip shop which has been in Kensington for many years now. The owners and their staff are friendly, helpful and generous -they always give us something extra. I almost always have the barramundi and the scallops but others in my family have had many of the other items on offer and the food is always great. Thanks a lot for being there, guys.
Visited this fish & chip shop on my commute home after a long day at work in stifling heat. I was just after a quick snack and ordered a sav in batter to my surprise, when I opened the bag they’d thrown in a potato cake.
That’s the kind of good old-fashioned Aussie fish & chip shop service you don’t forget. Absolute legends!!
Best Fish and Chip shop in inner city Melb! Always fresh, not oily, tasty, usually get an extra potato cake here and there. Staff always friendly and nice even when busy.
With old school prices and old school hospitality, you cant go wrong! I moved away from the area and will still travel back to eat here!
I ordered a burger with the lot a steamed dim sim and some chips. Has got to be the best old school, traditional burger I have had in Australia so far – Fresh ingredients, tasty patty and perfectly toasted bun.
Chips were also very fresh, crispy at not drenched in oil.
Steamed dim sim was also good.
Service also fantastic.
I’ll definitely be back.
Top notch fish and chip shop that I’ve been craving ever since I moved away from Melbourne. I had some flake, dim sims, chips and a souvlaki, and it was so good I went there 3 times in a week.
Absolute legend who runs the place who I could talk footy to all day.
