About
Monty Fish & Chips is a well-regarded fish and chip shop in Montmorency, drawing regulars from across Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs with consistently solid food and a relaxed, casual setup. The shop carries a well-rated reputation built on doing the classics right, from grilled flake and chips through to burgers and dim sims.
The potato cakes have become something of a local talking point. Regulars describe them as exceptionally crispy, and they’re available in a gluten-free version alongside the gluten-free fish, making the menu genuinely accessible for those with dietary needs. The chips themselves are praised for hitting that ideal contrast of crunchy exterior and fluffy inside, and the grilled flake is a popular order for those after something lighter. A kids menu means families are well looked after, which suits the shop’s busy weekend crowd.
Takeaway is the main event here, with casual seating out front for those who prefer to eat on the spot. Delivery is also available for orders placed from home. Staff are noted for being friendly and efficient even when the queue builds up, which is a regular occurrence on weekends. The atmosphere carries a nostalgic fish-and-chip-shop feel that keeps people coming back.
Dine-in, takeaway, and delivery are all on offer. Phone ahead during peak dinner service to keep wait times down.

Not a bad fish n chip store. The fellas seem pretty nice.
Got my food really quick also.
Quality of the beef burger could be better. Apart from that. Kudos!
Tonight I ordered two grilled flake and some potato cakes. When I arrived to pick up the order, the fish was ready but the potato cakes hadn’t been put into cook yet. When I got it home the fish was cold rubbery, at $8.90 a piece of fish, they won’t get my money again! Absolutely terrible.
Takeaway or tables out the front. The best crunchiest potatoe cakes ever. Great grilled flake and chips. Great find. Will be back.
Small shop. Great Fish & Chips. Visited few weeks ago, got a bite before to eat, meeting friends across the road.. Unexpected. Shop appeal poor – Don’t Judge.. Going back with family tonight..
We had the fish burger, grilled fish and chips, the food was really nice and good value. It was busy when we went, (but that’s a good thing 🙂) and the staff are friendly and helpful. I will definitely go there again.
Amazing fish n chips cooked in tallow instead of those disgusting seed oils. Im suggesting this is one of Melbourne’s best fish n chips. The chips are crispy and crunchy and soft and fluffy inside. The gluten free fish and potato cakes are easily the best ive eaten.
Super nice guy serving the food and everything was prepared and cooked extremely quickly. I can believe I haven’t been here sooner.
Chips were really nice, but a much smaller amount than other “minimum” sized chips locally (briar hill, bolton st & research).
Didn’t love the potato cakes and everything was a bit oily. Grilled flake was great 👍
Nostalgic feel fish and chip shop.
Ordered a kids pack to keep my 3 year old happy during an afternoon drive and ended up wanting a whole pack to myself.. the potato cakes were unbelievably good.
I’m going back tomorrow!
