About
King Neptune’s Fish & Chips sits in Newcomb, Victoria, and covers a lot of ground when it comes to options. Dine-in, takeaway, and delivery are all available, the venue is family friendly with a kids’ menu, and the kitchen runs across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Free parking on site makes the visit straightforward. Flake and chips is the signature dish, and the menu also features butterfish, blue grenadier, flathead, and calamari, alongside family packs for those feeding a crowd. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are on offer as well.
The shop has shown genuine care for diners with dietary needs. Staff have gone to the effort of preparing a dairy-free batter on site when asked, checking ingredients carefully before cooking. That kind of attentiveness leaves a strong impression when it happens. The flake, when it’s on song, is well cooked and well received, and the grilled options have drawn praise for seasoning and execution.
Consistency is the area where the kitchen has more ground to cover. Portion sizes have drawn comment, particularly around chips and calamari, and potato cakes have occasionally landed undercooked. Wait times can stretch during busy periods. The new management has drawn some cautiously positive responses, which suggests things are moving in the right direction, even if the experience can vary visit to visit.
For a casual fish and chips meal in Newcomb with a broad menu and plenty of flexibility around dietary requirements, King Neptune’s is worth keeping on the list. Checking in during quieter service times may help. Phone ahead for larger orders.

Don’t waste your time and money go to Wilson’s rd. Horrible oil soaked fish, asked the cook what $8 bucks of chips looked like, looked good for 3.5 people ended up with a serving for 1. Cold steamed Dim Sims and potato cakes that would out crisp Smiths crinkle cut. Wanted to take it bake but saved my fuel instead.
Was shocked to open our pack and see the small size of the fish and cut calamari. I paid 10.30 for the tiny crumbled fish and 9.30 for the battered. We also had a medium chips which pulled up the very sad order. We usually order from a different store and have left overs. Today we were still hungry and felt ripped off. Never again.
Horrible food and service!!
Check food before you leave!!!
Saw they’re proudly ‘Under New Management’ and I’m embarrassed and disgusted in them.
Today we ordered some fish, potato cakes, fried dim sims, potato cake stacker, sav in batter and chips. They threw in a bunch of random items like fish bites and crab sticks (which we didn’t order) possibly to compensate the horrible food/service and about 20 chicken nuggets that were half cooked and felt like plastic.
Grilled fish cost $10.20 (see photo)… Waste of money.
Potato cakes, fish and nuggets are rubber. Absolutely pathetic. Felt sorry for the new girl who was clearly left to run the shop on 27/12 on her second shift. The cook decided to ‘leave’ during our order that was stuffed up so had to wait for the rest of our food to be cooked – but everything went cold.
Would NOT recommend ordering any food here.
False advertising of food they offer/cook….
Most mangled potato cakes I have had in my life, undercooked and overloaded with oil. Got a large chips to be safe for feeding 2 people. About enough to feed one. Go see George on Wilson’s road for your fish and chip fix.
Update: threw the potato cakes out to some magpies last night and not even they ate them. Showed my meal to the worker and he accepted they were far below quality. have been offered a voucher. Will possibly try again another day.
Update update: dared try again, chips were a much better quality. Potato cakes still oily and potato too thick making it not cook properly perhaps. More edible this time though so did eat. Potentially needs an increase in temperature of oil? Might try again in a few months. Staff very friendly.
Just ate 2 flakes and chips. I have an allergy. The friendly staff looked up everything precisely. The batter contained dairy, so they made a safe batter for me on site! Amazing. It was all really well cooked and lovely. Also, friendly staff greeted regulars by name. Venue is a little tired – but what fish and chip shop is t?
We only ordered chips and gravy, kinda hard to stuff up. But it tasted awful, like the chips were microwaved supermarket chips. And gravy was not thick like it used to be. The new managers need to pick up their game.. the last three orders I’ve made the food has been bad. I won’t be ordering again.
Food is fine, but for a fiver of chips this is woefull. Bought this for the nephew, little fellas goin to bed hungry since we only got a handful of chips, like far out…y’all are rationing out here. Not Happy.
I thought I’d give the new management a chance and I’m glad I did. I ordered a grilled barramundi (excellent, perfectly cooked and seasoned), chips (I would have expected more from a minimum chips, a bit disappointing – however, the flavour? I was impressed! These were more like a pub chip, crispy outer, fluffy inner) and corn jack (eh, can’t mess up a corn jack!)
My husband ordered a fish souva and said it was pretty decent. I’ve had issues at the other local fish and chip shop with wait time being triple what we were told, so I think this might be my new local.
