About
Saint Charles Fish & Chippery has built a solid reputation in Seddon as a dependable neighbourhood fish and chip shop, drawing regulars from across the inner west. The signature battered butterfish and chips is the clear crowd-pleaser, with the batter praised for coming out crispy and the fish tasting fresh. Chips are golden and never greasy, a consistency that keeps families coming back visit after visit. The house-made tartare sauce is a highlight to order alongside, and the menu also covers dim sims and potato cakes for those who want the full spread.
Serving sizes are generous and pricing sits at the affordable end, with no card surcharge adding to the appeal. Service is quick, which matters when hunger is involved. Dine-in seating is available both inside and outdoors, and the shop caters well to families with a dedicated kids’ menu. Takeaway and delivery are both on offer, and free parking makes drop-ins easy.
A small number of longer-term visitors have flagged some inconsistency in batter quality on recent visits, so it’s not quite perfect across the board. That said, the volume of positive feedback for this Seddon fish and chips spot tells its own story. For anyone in the Footscray and inner-west area hunting a solid feed at a fair price, Saint Charles is a strong choice.

Great value and delicious fish and chips. This is the better of the two in Seddon imo. We bought a fish pack from each place and compared them side by side.
The chips and fish batter are cooked well, nice and crispy, no soggy chips. And for $12 fish of the day box is better value for the portion you get.
Very conveniently located takeaway option. I get the grilled salmon, salad and brown rice pack here from time to time. Whilst it’s quite basic, for $15 it’s a simple takeaway option that’s also healthy and good value. We have also had the fish and chips here several times and on some days it’s good, and some days the batter really thick and doughy. But we still come here for takeaway quite a bit as very conveniently located, easy to get street parking, and the food is good more times than not. Staff are pleasant and friendly. Ordering is also easy as you can text them your order and they’ll respond promptly with a pickup time
Firstly before the negative the staff were polite and service was great. Chips, dim sims and potato cakes were nice BUT…
This is by far the worst flake batter ever. We have to completely remove it from our flakes. It is so dense, bread like and was just down right terrible. Never had a batter like this before. Because the batter was so thick the fish was undercooked a little
Unfortunately our regular shop ‘Seddon Fish and Chips’was closed so we thought we would try this one out. We wouldn’t order here again Unfortunately.
If you like batter that isn’t cooked on the inside, but incredibly oily, and snapper that’s basically turned to jelly when you bite into it. This is the place. Batter city all up in here.
Just disappointed enough to leave a review.
On the plus side, and weirdly enough, the fish bites were really good. Chips were really crisp and nice too.
Sadly, I won’t be returning though. Thanks for the fish bites though. X x
Everyone has their own “best fish and chip shop”, and this is mine. There is a huge variety available, and all at decent prices. They even don’t add the pesky card surcharge.
The fish is cooked excellently. Chips too. Not oily, but still tasting like real fish and chips, rather than processed fast food.
Staff are cool, and even remembered my name on the second visit.
If you live in Seddon, there’s another shop that’s good, but this one is better.
Absolutely loved Saint Charles! The fish was perfectly crispy, the chips golden and not greasy at all. Everything tasted super fresh, and the house-made tartare sauce was a standout. Friendly service and quick turnaround. Definitely my new go-to spot in Seddon for fish and chips!
Family comes here every time we visit Footscray.
The prices are affordable, and the servings are very generous. The chips and fish are never oily or greasy (PS: we’ve eaten here twice before); they taste like they’re cooked in good-quality, clean oil.
In fact, the battered butterfish we ordered was so delicious that even a very young, fussy eater—who never likes anything other than chicken nuggets and noodles—enjoyed it. It was the first time they had ever really eaten fish, and the whole family rejoiced.
Another good thing is that the staff are very friendly, and the service is wonderful. The food doesn’t take too long to be cooked and served, unlike at many other fish and chip stores.
Best in the west! The batter is perfection. Massive pieces of fish, amazing value and excellent service
