I WOULD SCORE IT ZERO IF GOOGLES ALLOWED ME TO DO SO.

Oily chips, smelly fish, unhygienic restaurant. Don’t believe they change their oil frequently.

    It’s a disgrace.

Tried the calamari box with grilled blue grenadier. The calamari rings and chips were ok, but the fish was disappointing. I guess you get what you pay for – I wasn’t expecting fresh fish for the price, but even for a frozen fish, tasted quite stale. Overall in consideration to price, it’s ok, something to help cull the hunger. Some seats outside, no indoor seating.

Price guide (as of May 2025)
Calamari box $19.09 (cc charge inclusive)

Giving credit where credit is due. I believe South Melbourne Fish and Chips has improved with the new employees over the past 3 months. I’ve really enjoyed the Potato Cakes – Golden Brown, Crunchy on the outside and white and soft on the inside Yummy. I’ve had freshly cooked fried Dim Dims that tasted fine. A few weeks ago I ordered a hamburger with the lot which was great. It took me back to the 1970’s old fashioned hamburgers – lightly toasted buns with lots of toppings – bacon, onions, tomato, egg and Tomato Sauce. It was very filling. I said to the new employees that it had improved since they were working there. It is a small shop – order then wait outside. There are a number of tables outside on Clarendon St which is where I usually sit to eat my meal. Lastly, I’ve noticed I can now place a phone order much more easily. From the food I’ve eaten there – Potato Cakes, Dim Sims and Hamburger – I give it Five Stars on those products. Service is friendly and helpful – Four Stars – I am very clear about what I do order – no upselling of other products and my preferences – ie No Soy Sauce ever for me – I am allergic to it . Remembering those small details along with personalised service in my opinion would make it closer to Five Stars. With atmosphere – its subjective on preferences. I think its a down to earth fish and chips shop that serves a purpose Personally I would some background music. So I rate its atmosphere as Three. South Melbourne Fish and Chips is close to where I live and I am happy to keep ordering the Potato Cakes, Dim Sims and Hamburger.

We always order from here when we stay in Melbourne. It never disappoints, however, this time the grilled fish was so hard, tough and chewy we couldn’t eat it. Expensive spend, that ended in the bin😬

Ordered 3 Dinner Packs last night. Paid to
upgrade from the Blue Grenadier to Flake. Allowed all to be put together into one pack but wasn’t expecting the lemon wedges chucked in with the fish and chips. The chips and potato cake were pretty good. The tartare sauces were the size of a 20 cent piece. The Dim Sims were missing. The fish was old and dry and almost inedible. The premises is filthy. Didn’t bother complaining about the dimmies as never going back. Hard pass.

I ordered a King George Whiting and minimum chips. The staff member who was cooking was by himself and he cooked about 4 different meals simultaneously. This man did not have any King George Whiting. It was a very small fish and I think it was blue Grenadier. The man doing the cooking never explained this to me. He probably thought I was too stupid to know this, so he charged me for a King George Whiting but served me 2 blue grenadier instead thinking that was acceptable. The fish and chips and calamari were beyond over cooked. The fish was so dry that it was practically inedible. I didn’t want 2 fish, but until I opened my fish and chips pack, I had no idea that I wasn’t getting King George Whiting. I watched him cook but thought these pieces of fish were for another customer. The chips were so overcooked that they didn’t taste like potato anymore but were like hardened bits of oil. It was such a rip off, charged for King George Whiting and getting a piece of rubbish. Clearly the worst fish and chips I have ever had, with the staff member thinking he could cheat me and charge me for it. I will obviously never come back here

Been ordering here for a while and it has been ok but last 3 orders absolutely no salt on the chips even though I orders with chicken salt, why 1 star, because chicken salt is worth nothing, how stingy to you have to be to do this?

Has been not too bad in the past but today I got flake n chips. The fish was thin & rubbery. The young lad that works there is nice enough but the precooked food is not as it used to be
