About
Northern Soul Chip Shop brings something genuinely different to the St Kilda fish and chip scene. Drawing on British and Irish chip shop traditions, the menu leans into bold spicing, curry sauces, and the kind of comfort food that regulars travel across the city, and apparently across the country, to track down. The spice bag is a real talking point, coating chicken evenly in warm seasoning and served alongside a curry dip that keeps people coming back. Potato cakes are another highlight, cooked to order and consistently well received.
The chips here are crispy and generous, and the salt and pepper bag has built its own following among those after something a little different from a standard fish and chip shop. The food draws a mixed crowd of locals, visitors from interstate, and tourists exploring St Kilda, all after that nostalgic takeaway experience done properly.
Northern Soul is takeaway only, so there is no dine-in seating, but free street parking is nearby and card and mobile payments are accepted. It suits a quick solo meal as much as a casual family outing. The shop is well rated across a solid number of reviews, and the friendly staff are regularly noted for being welcoming and helpful, even during busy service. Expect a short wait at peak times, particularly for dinner.
Phone ahead during the dinner rush to keep things moving.

Nailed an amazing meal out of trying spiced back chip shop in St Kilda. Food was delicious, chips and fried sausage was crunchy. Spiced are evenly coating the chicken and the curry dip was amazing. What a place to get your spice bag. Store Location is tricky for parking as council restriction is in play, but definitely worth the visit. Recommended.
If you’ve seen an Instagram video and decided to wait in queue for nearly 2 hours and then another hour for subpar potato cakes, fish and chicken spice packs like I did, don’t waste your time. The only thing good here is the sauces, it’s no where near what the influences say. Save your time and money. The potato cakes are thick, but thick with layers of crispy batter, nothing at all of substance. The fish… bland like cardboard. The spice pack was alright but overfilled with soggy chips to make it seem bigger. Again, don’t waste your time.
Arrived at 11:55am on a sunny Saturday and there were already 12 groups in front of us. We got to the front after 15mins to order. After ordering were advised that it would be ~20 mins wait for food. We waited at the tables outside to the right of the shop. After 20mins, we went back in for our order but the people at the start of the queue were only starting to receive their orders. There were so many people waiting inside the small store and it felt a bit hectic. It ended up being a 45min wait for our food to arrive unfortunately. They really need to work on a better kitchen workflow and a more efficient way for customers to order and collect orders. It all feels a bit messy at the moment.
Anyway, food was delicious but not worth the queues. The spice pack was delicious and crispy but not something I crave or really want to eat often. The curry sauce was really good though. Didn’t enjoy the prawn crackers as they were tasteless but good for texture only with the spice pack.
The potato cake wasn’t to my taste, the batter was salty and thick, but light and airy, and the potato inside was fluffy, but I prefer the classic potato cake where there is more crunch on the outside and a more scalloped solid potato inside.
The fish was the highlight – similar batter to the potato cake but crunchier and the fish was perfectly cooked. The gravy was strong in flavour and really reminded me of the London flavour. I wish I also got some mushy peas with it. The Tartare sauce was also great. Chips were pretty good too.
Portions for the mains are huge and should be shared between 2 people or more.
Order online next time then come for the pick up. Great food but not worth the long queues or going out of your way for imo.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4/5)
Overall: Good food, but not worth lining up for over an hour.
We arrived at 1:20pm on a hot, sunny Saturday and waited 55 minutes in line to order, plus another 20 minutes for the food. The restaurant sends a text when your order is ready, which is helpful. There are a few tables inside and outside if you want to dine in. Everything comes in takeaway boxes, wrapped in paper, and placed in a bag. Don’t forget utensils if you plan to eat nearby.
What we ordered:
Northern Soul Spice Bag (3.6/5) – $26
This was my first Irish spice bag, and I enjoyed it. It comes with curry sauce in a tub, with the option to add sweet and sour sauce for $2.50 extra. The spice, fried vegetables, chips, and chicken pieces all worked well together. That said, the more I ate, the saltier it got. The chicken wasn’t the best, and the chips could have been better, but overall it came together nicely. The curry sauce tasted like Japanese curry and was okay — I actually preferred it without the sauce.
Crispy Potato Cake (4/5) – $2.50
A solid, tasty potato cake. The batter was light and crispy. The curry sauce from the spice bag made a generous and tasty dipping sauce.
Battered Fish (4.5/5) – $14
Really delicious. Like the potato cake, the batter was crispy without being greasy and very pleasant to eat.
Would be a great spot for fish and chips if the line wasn’t so long!
Arrived at 3.45pm, for the evening opening at 4pm.
Would say that my experience was good cause only waited 30min in between ordering and getting the bag. Glad, cause I would’ve been frustrated, waiting longer, now knowing the food.
Good team taking orders.
The food is a low mid, oily +++, potato cake doesn’t have much taste, fish is alright, fries ok but served cold. Crazy since we were in the first orders and ate there.
Curry sauce is mid, soul sauce ok, but really liked the garlic sauce.
Didn’t have napkins in our bag, went to ask for some, the room was so packed, couldn’t reach anyone working there, no bathroom, washed my hands with a bit of the water I bought, supposed to be my drink. Alright.
The backyard is nice for enjoying the meal.
Traveled from Western Australia to try these rather splendid Fish & Chips. They are next level and the best I’ve had in Australia. The curry sauce was amazing, the potato cake was cooked to perfection. Washed down with Orange Tango. You know when you’ve been Tango’d.
Perfection well done.
Went this evening with my mum, what an incredible place! We were served by Beth & Chloe who were both wonderful, couldn’t be more helpful. Our food was amazing, cooked perfectly & the spice bag & potato cakes a stand out! It was so nice to have a taste of home after being away for a good few months. 10/10 would recommend
Came here after fancying ‘English style’ Chinese and chippy for a while… it did not disappoint. The chips were amazing & the salt & pepper bag was also so good. A lovely reminder of takeaway back home
