About
Chippy’s Fish Cafe is a casual dine-in and takeaway spot in Butler, Western Australia, serving lunch and dinner with a menu that covers the classics. Snapper and chips, the Fisherman’s Basket, burgers, salads, and a range of sea snacks make up the core offering, with vegetarian options also available. The shop is family-friendly, with a kids’ menu and high chairs on hand, and the space is wheelchair-accessible with free parking nearby.
Delivery is available for those who prefer to eat at home, and the casual setup suits solo diners and groups alike. A wait is fairly typical, so building in a few extra minutes is a reasonable approach, particularly during the dinner service. The shop does not take reservations.
Recent feedback suggests the experience has been inconsistent for some regulars, particularly around food quality and chip preparation. Those coming in for a sit-down meal during quieter periods tend to fare better. The menu does offer variety, and the snapper remains a menu highlight for those who want a straightforward fish and chips meal in the Butler area.

King snapper & chips $18 not good raw and had a funny taste to the fish, told to worker on shift because I ate in for lunch was asked if I want another one I didn’t want replacement didn’t taste good & 4 hours later still feel unsettle in the stomach, probably would have commented on this if I was given the option to get money refund but no such thing offered.
This is the second time we have received inedible chips from this Cafe. Each time I was given refried overcooked soggy chips. $5 for a handful of chips that can’t be eaten especially by young children. The first time I complained and went back and received fresh cooked chips to replace them and they were perfect, as they should always be. This time today, I can’t be bothered to go back and fuel is too expensive atm. We just will not be ordering with them ever again.
Been ordering from Chippys Fish Cafe Butler for around 10 years. Obviously it has changed owners, as the food was dry, tasteless and the worst fish and chips I have ever ordered. Ordered 3 serves of whiting which, in the past, was always 5 pieces per serve. When I received 9 pieces, I called the restaurant and was advised that you only get 3 serves of whiting per serve, as whiting is expensive and we need to make a profit. The pictured fish cost $60 (robbery) The batter was dry, the chips were dry and burnt, one dry prawn cutlet for $3.25, the pineapple fritters were thin and dry and the curry sauce was not a curry sauce. I will never be ordering from this restaurant again.
I have eaten here quite a few times over the years (had white pudding, haggis, battered sausages, snapper, cod, Spanish mackerel etc).
It hasn’t gone down hill since changing ownership but I’m disappointed that as of late 2024 they no longer offer any of the Scottish items. They are now marked as N/A on their menu board. The comment below is from the past owners and it was from some years ago.
Now, on the plus side, snapper and chips is always pretty good and they are open at lunchtime every day.
Worst fish and chips I have had!
There was a prawn in with my fish
My grandson wasn’t eating his fish, when I checked why it was a bit of raw potato in batter
Batter was chewy not crunchy
Based on the review stars, this fish and chip shop is average at best, if not below average, after reading other reviews. I’ve always come to this place over the years; however, after a change in ownership, the quality of the food has decreased. I’ve always ordered the ‘Tradie Pack’ as it comes with 1 fish, a crab stick, 5 squid rings, minimum chips, and a 250mL can of drink, all for $15 (before 4 pm). For me, this is fantastic value, and you could feed 2 people with this; however, there is an issue. The quality of the food was significantly decreased to the point that I am writing this review after coming here for so long. The batter is chewy like paste and not crispy at all. You could cut the fish in half, and the meat will fall out of the batter casing. Despite this, I do like the flavour of the batter; however, the texture ruins it. The fish had a fishy flavour, and it lacked the fresh taste altogether; it tasted. I do not know where the fish is sourced from; however, the quality of it should be the priority. The chips were decent, they are golden with some that air “airy” which gives the strong taste of the oil, which isn’t bad for me. I’m glad the chips haven’t changed too much; however, the squid rings were the worst part. Again, the batter was chewy and soggy, accompanied by a bland-tasting squid. You were eating a chewy, bland dough, which isn’t pleasant, but I was pleased that the value pack came with 5 of them, even if they were terrible. Now the crab stick was great, you can’t go wrong with it, but I can recount one time where I did order the battered prawn cutlets and they were disgusting. A really small prawn that had no taste whatsoever was accompanied by the chewy, bland batter.
Overall, the quality of this place has unfortunately declined with the new ownership. I do not hate the new owners; I would like to encourage them to make significant changes in order to succeed. This shop has family history in it (on the walls), and it feels like its identity has gone, which is not good at all. I mainly come to this place because of the tradie pack, and it opens after 11. I saw that Chippy’s Fish Cafe has locations in Yanchep and Carramar, and I do not know if they are having issues, but the Butler one needs to take more consideration with quality in order to retain and attract new customers = success. I will still order from here; however, real changes are needed, and not only me, but locals and newcomers will appreciate the effort if the new owners take serious charge. I noticed it’s still the same exact business model, and Facebook is no longer actively posting. Anyways, I hope the owners view this review and consider it because I only want the best for Chippy’s fish cafe, Butler, and want to be able to recommend it to everyone, knowing that they won’t be left feeling disappointed.
Ordered fish and chips when we got it it was cold
My daughter chicken nuggets whas dry and cold and she was supposed to get 6 nuggets but only got 4.
Unfortunately a very disappointing experience with the quality of food tonight. The chips were all over cooked and full of grease… Barely edible…
