About
Sgt. Baker Fish & Chippery is a casual fish and chip shop in Mernda serving lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. The menu covers the classics well, with fresh flake, calamari rings, potato cakes, dim sims (both fried and steamed), and a kids menu that makes it a genuine option for families. The retro-style interior gives the place a bit of character, and dine-in or takeaway are both available.
The potato cakes are the clear standout here. Regulars describe them as crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and well ahead of what most fish and chip shops in the area put out. The flake is noted as fresh, cooked in a light batter that avoids the heavy, oily result common elsewhere. Calamari rings have also drawn praise for being tender rather than rubbery. Portions are considered generous for the price, with moderate pricing across the board.
The shop is wheelchair accessible, has free parking nearby, and accepts reservations, which is handy for families wanting to sit down without the wait. Service is described as friendly and welcoming.
A decent choice for fish and chips in Mernda, particularly if potato cakes are on the shopping list. Phone ahead during the dinner service on weekends.

Wow 😮!! An excellent fish 🐟 & chips 🍟 shop. Very reasonable price, like $8.5 grilled chicken and chips was enough for 2 people. Yummy …,nice taste. Good customer service with big smile, retro style interior; a complete package u gonna love it.
Not bad, quality is still the same. Crispy flakes are good Surprisingly the grill barramundi size is small but the taste is alright. Last but not least the price is reasonable. Keep up the good work ✌️
Potato cakes were so overcooked they were black in places & was hard to find any potato. Dim Sims were overcooked but not as bad as the PCs. What makes it worse is that whoever took them out of the oil & wrapped them would have 100% seen them but still handed them over & took my daughter’s money. Shame!!!
New owners? Last time was over a year ago and it was hands down the worst Fish and Chips!! ( No offence if same owners). Tonight super fresh flake last time seemed processed frozen. Calamari rings super tender. My 95 year old Nan lives across the road in the Nursing home and if she knew how to use Google she would be giving them 5 stars, otherwise I wouldn’t have tried again!!
Best potato cakes I’ve ever had. I grab some for lunch every Saturday. All other food I’ve tried has been great.
I’m sorry to say, but this is the worst fish and chips I’ve had in a very long time.
The lettuce in my burger was wilted, brown on the edges, and smelt rancid. The rancid smell alone made it uneatable. My husband, who isn’t fussy, couldn’t even finish half of his burger; he said it’s the worst burger he’s ever had.
The fish was dry and tasted overly fishy. The chips were undercooked and barely salted. The potato cake was okay.
This place used to be really good, I don’t know what happened..
First time trying their fish & chips and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The fish was fresh with a nice light batter and not oily at all. The potato cakes were next level, crispy on the outside & fluffy on the inside, easily the best we’ve had around here. Will definitely be back!
Very tasty, good serves, just order ahead, bit busy but that’s a good thing.
