About
Mermaid Fish And Chips has built a solid reputation in Thomastown, with well over two hundred locals and visitors rating it highly as one of the more reliable fish and chip shops in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The food is the main draw, and regulars come back for it consistently. Batter is crispy on the outside while staying soft inside, holding up well from the moment it’s served. Chips are cooked to a clean, golden finish rather than left pale or greasy.
Flake is a fixture on the menu, available battered or grilled, and both preparations receive consistent praise. Battered prawns, potato cakes, and battered scallops also feature, with the scallops noted for being a generous size. The shop is a solid option for anyone new to the classic fish-and-chips experience too, with staff known to help first-timers work out what to order.
Mermaid is open for both lunch and dinner, with takeaway and delivery available to cover different situations. Free on-site parking makes a quick stop easy, and the venue is family friendly with a kids’ menu on offer. Payment by card or mobile is accepted. Wheelchair-accessible parking is available on-site.
For anyone around Thomastown looking for a well-regarded local fish and chip shop, Mermaid is worth keeping in mind. Check opening hours before heading in during the dinner rush, as it draws a crowd.

So I wanted to try fish and chips for the first time ever and searched for the nearest place and found this. The girl helped me choose what I should try for my first time and I had the basic fish and chips which was yummy. For anyone who wants to have fish and chips, this is the place and their menu is also good.
Great crispy flake nice and thin. Battered scallop was a big size. Nice people gave us extra potato cake free. Potato was slso good and delicious battered prawn.
Great food! Grilled flak was delicious and chips
Perfectly cooked. Customer service lacking however
Everything about this shop is great. Tho the lady did seem a lil grumpy, maybe it’s just me. But the food here is just perfect, a lil sad you gotta pay for the sauce tho. Taste wise. 10/10. Crispy outside that holds the crispiness, soft and juicy fishes. Barramundi is slightly fishy which I’ve been told is normal, flake was on point. Fries freshly fried thick cut.
By far the best fish and chip shop in Melbourne. They are just ALWAYS on point. I never go anywhere else. Fresh, clean and delicious! Places like this are very hard to come by! Thanks for always producing top quality fish and chips! X
Ps. I took a bite out of the fish already I couldn’t help myself :p
Was my favourite shop for the past 6-7 years, however seems like the ownership and staff have changed and now the food is no longer well done, crispy or crunchy.
I’ve noticed galvanised metal and random aluminum strips added to the cooking surfaces and they do not look food grade/food safe but rather appear home made.
They lost me as a customer as I write this eating their undercooked fish. Shame!
3 items for take away and no bag or anything to carry them. Are you for real? It’s hot food as well.
AVOID KEEP AWAY !!!!! I ordered 1 flake 3 patatato cakes and 2 crab sticks. I rang the owner & explained there not cooked batter is still sticky. I called & explained but she didn’t care .I paid $21 & $7 for a 1.25 litre coke. A seagull won’t even eat it
