What this directory is

Fish and Chips Near Me is an independent directory of fish and chip shops in Australia. It lists more than two thousand shops across all eight states and territories, from Port Douglas to Hobart and Broome to Byron Bay.

Most listings carry a phone number, trading hours, a street address with a map and a link to directions. A small number have no phone number on record, and where a shop is closed on a given day, that day simply does not appear in its hours.

Beyond the basics, around seven listings in eight have a photograph of the shop that has passed a quality check, and the rest show a placeholder. More than half link to the business's own website. Every listing carries a written description of what the shop is known for, drawn from what its own customers have said. Around one in four carries a full itemised menu with prices, and about half list the specific fish species stocked.

We do not take payment for a listing, and no shop can pay to move up a page.

Where the data comes from, and how current it is

Every listing starts from a business's public Google Business Profile: name, address, phone, trading hours, category, rating and review count. That is the spine of the record, and it is what most directories stop at. On top of it we add four things.

Photographs. Each shop's main photo comes from its public listing and is then run through an image classifier that checks it actually shows the business. Street views, blurred shots and stock imagery are discarded rather than shown. Between the photos we rejected and the shops that never published one, about one listing in eight shows a placeholder.

What customers actually say. Up to eight reviews per shop are read and condensed into a short plain-English summary of what that shop is known for: the dish people order, whether the chips get praised, whether the fish is called fresh, whether the queue is long. Eight is a cap rather than a shop's review history, and it is the sample Google surfaces as most relevant, so our summaries describe what came up in that sample and not everything a shop's customers have ever written. The summaries paraphrase, they do not quote a reviewer without attribution, and they never invent a compliment nobody made.

Menus. Where a shop publishes a menu on its own website or ordering platform, we read it and store it as items and prices. Around one shop in four publishes enough for that to work. Many Australian takeaways publish their menu as a photograph, on Facebook only, through an ordering platform we cannot read, or not at all.

Fish and menu specifics. Where the evidence supports it we record which species a shop stocks, which Australian takeaway classics it does, its batter style and its kitchen's leaning. That is why a suburb page can tell you which shops actually have flake and which have barramundi.

On accuracy. The dataset was last refreshed in full on 20 May 2026. Shops close, move and change their hours, and some of what is here will be out of date at any given moment. Every listing carries a "Something wrong with this listing? Tell us" link that goes to our contact form, and corrections are made without charge, whether or not the business pays us for anything. If a shop on this site has closed, tell us and it comes down.

Search Listings

Type a suburb into the search box, or work down from your state. Every suburb page lists the shops there with their rating, their hours and what they are known for.

Choose a Fish & Chip Shop

Two filters, and they are the two we could build properly. Open now checks the current time against that shop's own trading hours in its own state's timezone, and you can also pick a specific day. Dine-in narrows to shops with seating rather than takeaway only.

Get Directions

Each listing shows the day-by-day hours, the phone number, recent customer feedback, and where we have it the menu with prices. Directions open straight into Google Maps.

What makes a good fish and chip shop

Across the reviews we read, up to eight for each shop, a few things come up again and again.

The fish matters more than the shop's name. Setting aside calamari, which is on more menus than anything else and is not a fish, flake is the most commonly stocked fish in the shops listed here, followed by barramundi, snapper, whiting and hoki. Flake is gummy shark and has a firm, mild, meaty texture. Barramundi and snapper are leaner and hold up better grilled. Hoki and basa are the cheaper imports and are usually what is meant by an unspecified "fish". A shop that names its species on the board is telling you something, and a shop that just says "fish" is telling you something too.

Cooked to order beats the heat lamp. (Our view, not a dataset finding.) The most common complaint in the reviews we read is food that has been sitting. The most common compliment is a short wait for something that came straight out of the fryer. A queue at six on a Friday is usually a good sign.

Chips are their own skill. Reviewers treat chips as a separate judgement from fish, and shops are frequently praised for one and criticised for the other. Hand-cut chips, cooked twice, are the thing people write about.

The extras tell you where you are. What sits on the warmer beside the fish is regional. Potato scallops dominate menus in New South Wales and Queensland; the same item is a potato cake in Victoria and Tasmania; South Australia calls it a fritter and almost nowhere else does. Dim sims are close to universal in Victoria and common in the west. Souvlaki turns up mainly in Greek-Australian shops.

Ask about the oil. (Our view, not a dataset finding.) Shops that filter or change their oil often get noticeably better write-ups on both fish and chips. It is a fair question to ask over the counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fish and Chips Near Me is an independent directory of Australian fish and chip shops. You can search by suburb or by what is near you, check opening hours, browse photos and reviews, and see what each shop is known for.

Type your suburb into the search bar, or use the near me option. You'll see the shops nearby with their address, opening hours, Google rating and a summary of what customers say about them.

You can filter by dine-in, and by opening hours, including shops that are open right now. Those are the two filters we could build properly from the data we hold, so those are the two we offer.

We do our best to keep listings up to date, but shop details can change without notice. If you spot something incorrect, please let us know so we can update it quickly.

No. We don't sell fish & chips ourselves, our role is to help you find the best local shops in your area. To order, contact the shop directly using the phone number or website on their listing.

We're working on it! Our directory already includes over 2,000 listings nationwide, and we're adding more all the time.

It's completely free to use. Just search, filter, and find the right fish & chip shop for you.

Each listing begins with the business's public Google Business Profile. We then add a photo check, a plain-English summary of recent customer feedback, and, where a shop publishes one, its menu and prices. The full method is on our Editorial and Data Policy page.

Suburb and state pages show a small number of editorially highlighted shops first, chosen on their Google rating alone, and then the rest. No position on this site is for sale. A shop cannot pay to rank higher, to have a poor review summary removed, or to be described more favourably.

No. Every shop here is listed free and was added without the owner needing to do anything. If something on a listing is wrong, tell us and we will correct it at no charge, whether or not the business pays us for anything. Paid options exist for shops that want a fuller page, more photos and their menu published, and they are entirely optional.

Every listing has a "Something wrong with this listing? Tell us" link that opens our contact form. Corrections to hours, phone numbers, addresses and closures are free. If a shop has closed, tell us and we remove it. The separate "Is this your business?" link is for owners who want to promote a listing, and you do not need it to report an error.
